Positive OPK but BFN HPT

I've read some older threads about this, but I thought I would put the question to a current audience. I am 15 dpo, and keep getting BFNs on HPTs. I was out of tests (I'm sort of a nut when it comes to taking them) but I had an OPK. I mostly did it for fun, but it had a very obvious second line. I've heard both sides... it could be that it detects pregnancy and NO, never use it to detect pregnancy. Anyone have personal experience with this?

Re: Positive OPK but BFN HPT

  • Are you sure you are 15 dpo and not ovulating late?

  • I'm pretty sure. My cycle is fairly regular, and I got a positive OPK earlier in the month when I would expect to be ovulating.

  • The thing with OPK is it can give u more than one positive in a cycle. I would always get more than one positive because it detects a rise in LH which is what increases before ovulation but that doesn't mean you actually ovulated at that time. You can have multiple LH surges in a cycle. So you might not have ovulated last time, maybe your body was gearing up to but never actually did. That would also explain why you think your 15 dpo but no AF or positive HPT. You're cycle is regular til it's not.

  • I think it's also important to point out that opk's ALWAYS have two lines. You produce LH during your entire cycle and an opk detects this hormone. It's the SURGE that happens before ovulation that gives you a positive OPK. Was the second line as dark or darker than the control? If not then this was not a positive OPK.
