GTKY: 4th of July Rant/Rave/Fun!

I feel like we haven't done a random GTKY question for the whole board in a while. So, what's everyone doing this weekend for the 4th? Any big plans?
Anyone care to rant about how flippin' busy and exhausting it's going to be, or how annoying the fireworks have already been this last week? Anyone super excited and LOVE the 4th of July festivities? Let's hear it!

Re: GTKY: 4th of July Rant/Rave/Fun!

  •   Today is officially "I could give zero f*cks Friday" for me.  I am the only one in the office and forced to here b/c my entire peer group took it off.   I am hours away from vacation and I plan on doing a whole lot of nothing and don't even feel one bit bad about it.  love it.
  • Loading the player...
  • I loved fire works until I had DD. Now they drive me crazy. They've shot fireworks off every night this week so far and it has pretty much doubled the amount of time it takes to get DD to settle down and fall asleep.
  • This is my first human baby, but my canine babies HATE fireworks. They pace and cry and whine when they hear them. Which is fair, I'm sure it's horrifying for them, but I don't like not getting any sleep. They're all three large breed dogs (two 1 1/2 yo German Shepards and a 6 yo boxer) and when those fireworks start each and every one of them is suddenly in my queen sized bed alongside me and DH.

We're taking a last little trip to a resort about an hour away from home. We're going to see some of DH's college friends for dinner at their house on Sunday and then I'm going to sit by the pool and he'll play golf of Monday.

I'm also taking a half day today from work, having lunch with a friend and then a doctor's appointment this afternoon.

    Looking forward to it!  :)
  • @Knottie1442786653 Poor babies!!! Our 4-year-old corgi/beagle mix just barks at them incessantly. We have a baby black lab/Aussi shepherd mix who seems to be doing okay, but we'll see this weekend...

  • ALSO, I think I'll share my rant about this ridiculously busy weekend we're about to have. I'm so bored at work right now...
We basically jam-packed our weekend with plans and I'm already exhausted and regretting it.
Today, DH stayed home with the kids and let each of them have a friend over. But one of the friend's - my best friend's daughter - just got picked up because she's sick (thanks a lot, bestie, for still bringing her over even though she threw up last night. She ended up developing a fever and throwing up at our house. Now I get to cross my fingers that none of us get sick this weekend.).  The other friend is still spending the night tonight, so we have THREE kids, and three's a crowd. Let the fights about being left out begin.

Tomorrow, we have my daughter's soccer game at 10. Then we're going to the kids' friends' house for a few hours. Then my stepson is getting picked up to spend the evening with his mom and DH, DD, and I are going to a friend's house for a cookout and fireworks (to which I'm supposed to bring a side that "starts with the same letter as my name". I'm about to bring some store-bought potato salad and call it "Just Potato Salad" because I can't think of anything that starts with a J and I don't want to cook).

Sunday we get my stepson back in the morning and we have to clean and do yard work before heading to a baseball game at 7:00 for the game and fireworks show.

And then Monday - the actual holiday - we're having family over for a cookout and fireworks. The over-achiever in me wants to do cute holiday-themed drinks and decorations, but the big pregnant lady in me just wants to do the bare minimum and hope people bring sides. Lol. We spent about $150 at CostCo last night getting all of the food and drinks, plus another $150 on fireworks. So this holiday is turning out to be way too expensive for my taste, and way too much work!

  • We usually go out of town with friends for the 4th. Her parents live on a lake in the middle of nowhere Louisiana and her mom politely refused us coming to town with my BP situation and no hospital close by. Haha

so we will be staying home with the fur babies all weekend. Maybe a trip to the pool if I hear back from the OB. Btw- I hate that most Drs office close at noon on Friday! Some of us are waiting on results!!!
34 Mother of 4 year old and 2 Labs. Happily Married to my Hubs of 6 years.
  • Planning to lay pretty low.  DH has been driving to Dallas for work a lot the past few weeks, so he wants to stick close to home and I'm all about that!  Hoping to make a trip to the storage unit at some point to pull out a few necessities--- RNP, swing, Newborn girl clothes just in case... I also want to get in a run or 2 and get some nesting done.  I thought about suggesting we pay $20 to take DD to the rec center we used to have a membership to, so we could run indoors and play at the pool. We'll see. Sunday we have to go to Dallas for a work party thing of DH's and Monday we'll go to my parents for a little while and stash the newborn things.
  • No plans for us. We don't have any family in our city and we aren't able to leave town this weekend. But I get a three-day weekend and that is enough for me! No complaints here. I would like to work on baby prepping, and DH really wants to go fishing on Sunday, so I'll tag along. Also, we live in a high-rise apartment and our terrace has a good view of the city, so it's fun on the 4th because we can see the fireworks displays going on in different parts of town all weekend. We don't even have to go anywhere for viewing. The only downside is our grill is broken... Id' really like to grill up some good 4th of July food. Being inside by the stove or oven is just not appealing.
  • We are going camping at our property up north for the weekend. I am all for taking it easy and relaxing. We will fish and lay around on the beach. Dh's dad has a trailer in an association right around the corner so we will visit with him and watch their big firework show.
  • My nephews birthday party is on Saturday so a big family party to start the weekend. Then, we are nesting/organizing for the rest of the weekend and I'm so excited!

Then, on monday we will walk over to Grand Park with our pup and neighbors to walk around the festival and watch fireworks - all of our dogs are weird and actually like fireworks/sirens/loud noises - they start howling in unison lol
  • I have today off work and I'm trying to catch up on a little housework, pack the baby's diaper bag and pack our hospital bag. I will be going to get my TDap and running a couple errands. Basically, today is about being productive. Which is exactly why I'm sitting in front of the computer right now. Haha.

Tomorrow, we plan to go recliner shopping for the nursery and take on a couple house projects. DH wanted to do some landscaping, but the weather is not cooperating for that. We briefly thought about having a cookout this weekend, but we decided we would rather put our time and effort into completing projects.

Sunday, DH plans to brew beer (we're having an Oktoberfest themed party in the Fall and the wants all the beer brewed before baby comes).

Monday, a friend is having a pool party/cookout. I've been really excited about swimming, since I haven't been in a pool since our cruise in March. Unfortunately, the forecast is calling for thunder storms. REALLY hoping that changes and the weather is great for us. We won't be staying for fireworks. We both work Tuesday and we have birthing class after work, so it will be a long day. I want to go to bed early, even though I'm sure fireworks will keep us awake for a bit.

  • @skichic626 Good luck!!

We have a busy weekend. DH gets home from China late tonight and then I think we may jump in the car and drive 3 hours to his parents house. We will spend the weekend with the in-laws and his family trying to see as many people as possible. This is probably our last trip down there for a while since we just went last month and I'm not going to travel with a newborn for a while. He has a huge weekend planned, but I'm hoping to just lay low and relax!  We'll see. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

  • We missed our babymoon in May since my husband wasn't working, so we decided to make up for it this weekend before he starts his new job next week.

We're headed down to the Berkshires for the weekend. We are going to Bob Dylan on Saturday, and James Taylor on Monday night (both at tanglewood.) We got a hotel Saturday and Sunday nights, and are planning on hanging out by the pool and going out to eat on Sunday - Low key since we are attempting to drag my pregnant self out to TWO outdoor concerts in three days. My husband bought me a portable hammock to set up at the concert so "Feets can go UP" and we already called about parking in the accessible lot (management said yes.)

  • @Allisun85 That sounds amazing!!
  • @allisun85 #superjealous  Have a great time! sounds awesome
  • so far work has been hectic busy, and now i have one busy weekend that i wish i did not have but look forward to seeing fireworks and see how baby girl takes all that noise
  • DH came back home from Africa on Monday so I am hoping that this weekend we can finish up some of my last 'to do' baby stuff - pack hospital bag, install car seat, etc.
Other then that I hope it will be low key and I can get some sleep this weekend!

  • We were supposed to be going away, but my doctor vetoed our vacation :( Now we're going to be packing for our move, but we will get to see the fireworks display at the beach in our town. We are never home for 4th of July, because we always vacation that week, so I'm actually looking forward to enjoying all of our town events!

  • Everyone I know is going out of town and I am not even one bit envious.

We are going to a friend's house for dinner (it's taco night, who can resist?) tonight. Tomorrow? Hospital tour (that we missed a month ago), stopping by my friend's to drop off her baby gift (due one wk before me), and maybe get some groceries.

Rest of the wknd: Sleeping, working on the nursery, and other baby prep things which I am honestly looking forward to.
  • DH's entire extended family (2nd/3rd cousins) comes into town for the week of the 4th every year and they're a really fun bunch. Everyone goes to the shore and tonight we'll do lobster fest and tomorrow is BBQ on the beach. My parents have a house at the shore too so we'll stay with them and they'll come for the BBQ. Monday we're planning to head home somewhat early and just grill at our house with friends and watch fireworks from our deck. Typically lobster fest and BBQ are on the 3rd and 4th, respectively but because the holiday falls on a Mon this year everything got pushed back a day. I also took Tues off work because the only time I could get my 36wk appt was at noon so I figured why not just extend the weekend. I'll prob get a lot of nursery prep done on Tues.

  • Also, @1faceinacrowd, I'm exhausted just reading your post! Fingers crossed that you and your fam don't get sick!

  • My mom is coming into town Sunday and Monday to help DH and I get the whole nursery together. We'll also be exchanging duplicate gifts and buying the rest of what we need. I'm looking forward to getting everything done so I can just relax the rest of the pregnancy and wait for her to come!

As far as the holiday it's WAY too hot to go downtown for the fireworks. I don't feel like dealing with the crowd, the massss of drunk people or the crime, so we're just staying home. Since my mom will be here DH decided to grill hamburgers and corn on the cob on Monday. I'm looking forward to it!
  • Our big weekend plans are pretty much done now. Friday was my husband's birthday, so we had a bbq and some friends over. It was a late night and hubby drank enough to have a hangover the next day lol. And then we had friends over again last night for another bbq, because my friends husband couldn't make it on friday night to make his amazing African food, so he made it last night. As fun as it was, I was exhausted yesterday afternoon. And my 6 year old has been up hours past his bedtime for the last two nights. I plan on doing nothing tonight, and just taking my kids to fireworks tomorrow night. Or maybe just watch them from our yard. But I'm over doing anything that requires pants for the rest of the weekend
  • We are camping this weekend with my family as well as several friends. We are having a great time,  but I'm really pissed that I can't eat a mountain pie due to GD! I'm trying really hard to eat good stuff high in protein and low in carbs.
  • Our weekend started off eventful last night with false labor until 3am then I was finally able to fall asleep until 6:30 when DD woke up! We ran to target to get her a Fourth of July outfit and had plans to have a cookout tonight but we cancelled it since I am still having contractions every 10-20 min. I am plopped on the couch at my in laws house which is awesome because my MIL is an angel and will play with DD all weekend!! Tomorrow we will go to the parade then go home and rest until fireworks.
  • No plans here.  There are no laws in my neighborhood about fireworks and we are outside of city limits so was up until 2am this morning listening to fireworks and my dogs bark.  They started here about an hour ago already and my neighbors are setting off a ton of them.  Tonight will be another night without sleep and tomorrow is going to be much much worse.  Work on Tuesday will be dreadful.  Also, baby is reacting to all the noise.  She's been moving a lot!  Oh and now someone's car alarm is going off :) happy 4th everyone!
  • I planned on putting the final touches on the nursery and deep cleaning the house. So far we finished up Orange is the New Black and otherwise have just slept late, and DH has played video games while I surf the web. Fail.
Ugh we're so boring it drives me crazy sometimes but neither of us can think if anything we actually want to do and we don't have any friends to hang out with so it is what it is. Looking forward to baby keeping us busy even if it isn't always fun.

  • @Car0liiine you sound like me and DH. It's worse since we have DD becausr it's just a lot easier to stay at home so we don't have the "what do you want to do? I don't know, what do you want to do" we just stay at home.
  • We spent all day Saturday with DH, my mom, and MIL rearranging rooms, since we're moving DD out of the nursery and into a big room to eventually share with this little guy once he sleeps through the night. We changed her theme from pink and purple butterflies to a more gender neutral zoo animal theme, which she loves, but I'm sad to see the old stuff go. DH gets the nursery to turn into a tiny mancave (it's actually going to be the spare bedroom where my mom sleeps when she comes to watch DD, but DH is putting up a projector and all his basketball pictures and computer). There was a lot of stuff to rearrange and put together.
Yesterday we went shopping with the moms and got baby proofing stuff for the new room (since we will also eventually move DD into the toddler bed we put together). Then DD only got an hour nap and threw a fit when my mom tried to leave our house, so she took her with to go see grandpa. DD has never thrown a fit when someone leaves, so we were kind of stunned, but I'm glad she went to my parents house because I was exhausted and baby boy was kicking HARD last night.
Today DH, my mom, DD, and I are going to my great aunts house to see her and my grandma and possibly some other relatives and swim. Thankfully DH has tomorrow off and I don't babysit tomorrow so we'll have some housework time and relaxing time before going back to work.

@Bookhousegirl Oh no!  Why did you doc veto your vacation??  I haven't even told mine that we're going upstate next week for 10 days and I don't plan on it LOL.  Even if she told me I couldn't/shouldn't go, we'd be going anyway as long as I was still feeling and doing fine.  It's only a 3 hour drive.

@bookhousegirl I may not have mentioned our plans to my doctor for just this reason. I figure the hospital is an hour and a half for us now, or it would have been 45 minutes from where we were headed... I know you had a scary week last week though, so better safe than sorry :(

  • I stayed in all weekend and cleaned/baby prepped. I started watching Orphan Black on Amazon Prime and it is my new favorite show. I kind of missed being at the lake with everyone and we sent DS so that he could still have a great weekend, but I am happy I decided to skip out this year.
  • Friday i got to see my bff's and kids and fireworks which daughter not big fan of the noise, saturday went to a wedding and was out until 11pm almost and sunday went to church and baby shopping and had nephews over to spend the night, and yesterday went some what grocery shopping and laid at home for a few hours then ended up meeting in laws at the park as they sell food during a festival for 4th of July and was out there until late last night and finally crashed in bed when i got home and now i am at work wishing the weekend did not go by so fast

  • @SkiChic626 sorry, just saw this! I'm all good, but I was in L&D because I lost my mucus plug and ended up being dialated to about a 1.5 (this is why she said no to my vacation). I have a feeling my body is just preparing because I have no other signs of early labor, just pretty consistent Braxton hicks. I wouldn't have even mentioned my trip either, if it weren't for that hospital stay!

  • @Bookhousegirl I'm glad all else is OK and baby is still cooking!  I do remember reading about you losing your mucus plug, I missed the L&D and dilation part!
