Greek naming tradition

Okay, so we're having a girl and by Greek tradition (which I'd like to respect) we're supposed to name the child after the grandparents. My mom's name is Paraskevi and I'm looking for an anglicized version or something similar that will hold the tradition, but also be American and modern. Maybe...Vivianne or Viviana because the Greek nickname for Paraskevi is either Vivi or Voula? My husband is Hispanic so it was easy naming my son - he's Brendan Ricardo (after his father), so middle naming is acceptable too.

  • You'd be better off posting this on the name board.

  • Have you Googled the origin of the name? That can help you find similar names, non-greek variants of the name.
  • I'm loving Viviana and Vivianne- also just plain Vivi sounds great too.

  • What about Paris?
  • Paraskevi's meaning is "preparation"
  • I considered that too - not sure if the hubby will go with it though.

  • Viviana sounds nice I think, and it would mesh well with the Anglo/Hispanic names =)
  • Maybe ask your mother for suggestions?  It's her name? Maybe she has a nickname she always preferred I know our tradition is similar but my grandma hates her first name so my parents ended up using her middle name and changing it a bit with her suggestions.  So her name is Dorthy but she goes by Min or Marlene which is her second name so my parents asked her suggestion and named me Mindy-Lee but Marley was also my grandma's suggestion. I'd hated it if I was name Dorthy lol

  • Viviana or Vivian are nice! Personally I wouldn't connect them to Paraskevi unless you told me how they are related, but it works.
  •  I'm Latin so I'm supposed to include my moms name in the baby's  (having a girl). My moms name is Margaret,  not very hip.or modern so I went with a nickname approach and her middle name will be Margot. I looked up meaning and variations of Margaret and came up with this (better than Pearl or Daisy).  Not as tough as your situation but I think Vivianne is really pretty and vivi a great nickname.
