16 weeks aches and pains!

I'm 16w3d with my first and the last two days been having pain in my side/lower abdomen. I was at the dr on Monday for a check up and was told that the baby was sitting very low still. Anyone else experiencing this pain? It's very sharp, similar to a cramp you would get in your side while running or exercising. Thankfully it comes and goes I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to relieve it.

Re: 16 weeks aches and pains!

  • It's probably round ligament pain. It's gonna keep happening. Everything is stretching making room for baby. I find not making quick movements and holding my abdomen when sneezing/coughing helps.

  • I'm 16w4d  I've eeeen having a lot more uncomfortableness this week. I read that the baby grows a lot this week. It is probably RLP and your uterus stretching! You aren't alone!

That makes me feel better! I think part of my problem is that I've had such an easy time so far, this is the first uncomfortable thing so it just freaks you out a bit when you're unsure!
  • Every time I sneeze or cough my pain feels worse, but like PP said before, holding my stomach when this happens helps a lot. Walking also makes the pains sharpen.

  • I am 16 weeks 5 days and this week is definitely more uncomfortable. Hard to get comfortable in bed and I have been having lower abdominal pain at times
  • I'm not 16 weeks yet, but I notice if I'm sitting or laying down and get up too quickly, my pelvis is like "What the hell are you doing, woman?! Sit your ass down!"

This. This right here. And there's such a ways to go yet! SO teases me that he's going to get me a scooter.

Haha that is so completely true!!
  • Yes! I get cramps in my lower abdomen whenever I lie down or get up. I figured the baby was just moving everything out of the way and wasn't too worried about it, but it is still a relief to hear other moms are going through similar aches and pains.
  • I'll chime in! I am 16w3d and the aches are goin' down. I had a chiropractor appointment Monday, by strong recommendation from two friends who used this doctor while pregnant, and I can tell the adjustments will help tremendously. Something to consider! He stretched my right hip (which has been super sore already) and it was AMAAAAAAZING.

As always...Check with your OB first for their take on the concept.

Chiropractor vs parental massage. What's really the difference? For what/why would you pick one over the other?

My backs flared up here and there (had issues since my teens, don't let you kids be gymnasts  ) but I know it's only going to get worse the bigger I get.
  • @tinattt23 I have always heard the difference described as this: you can pop the bones and joints into place, but the muscles can pull them right back if not stretched. While a massage will stretch and soothe the muscles and the bones will follow as needed.

  • @Kate08Young Thanks! I like that description. I know my issues are muscle related (too torn up/stretched to hold my spine in place correctly) from back in my physical therapy days. I will certainly use this logic on my FI when I tell him I *need* to go get a massage :)

All this massage talk is making me drool....I want one so bad!! I made the mistake of googling though and there's so many conflicting opinions about massage in the 1st tri (this was a few weeks ago, I'm almost out now). So I haven't gotten one yet.....

  • I have never had a massage!  I tend to find pressure painful (when people have given me a back rub it hurts, blood pressure cuff is clearly trying to squeeze my arm off, etc) so I have avoided it.  I've heard so many people say that prenatal massage is just the best though that I am considering going for one.

My OB just recommended yoga and drinking plenty of water. I hope it goes away for you! Yoga helped with my first and I'm going to start up again with this LO next week.
  • I'll second the yoga recommendation (though I'm also going to try chiropractic and massage). My prenatal class has been really helpful. I skipped it today and I know I'm going to regret it.

BOTH! Adjust your bones and properly stretch your muscles. And! Lots of places offer both treatments.

     Mmmm massage.

  • Both chiropractic adjustments and massage are amazing. Massage Therapists are allowed to adjust the bones, which can be necessary especially in the pelvis as baby starts to grow. Massage is going to be relaxing overall, but can be especially beneficial if you are suffering from sciatica.

My place of employment does not allow for first trimester massages at all - not because it is dangerous (it isn't if your with a trained therapist) but because of the higher rate of first trimester miscarriages, it's just a liability issue. We also do not do postpartum massages until 6 weeks mainly because of bleeding concerns.
