  • Coconut oil was super helpful with DS! I put it on his scalp, massaged it in with the little scrubber we got from the hospital, and left it for 15-30 minutes. Then we just bathed him and washed his hair normally.

  • I have heard tons of good things about the coconut oil but have not personally tried it. I used baby oil which my pediatrician recommended. Put it on and massage it in, leave it for 20 minutes then comb through really good with those baby combs you get from the hospital. It all just peels away. It is kind of gross lol but I only had to do it for dd once and hers never came back. You just have to make sure you wash it really well once you are done.
  • I've heard tons of success stories of people using Ava Anderson products for cradle cap.

  • It wasn't something you did - they aren't really even sure what causes it - and it's a pretty common problem.

Here are some tips from Mayo Clinic on dealing with it:

It seems it's more about the process than the actual product - but if it's really bad your pediatrician may recommend a specific type of shampoo.
  • Don't use the special baby shampoo, because they match the pH of the shampoo to the baby's eyes so it doesn't sting, however the pH of skin is different so the shampoo dries out the baby's skin and causes the cradle cap to be worse.

This worked great for us too.  One time took care of it for us.
  • I tried so many different products with DS2, and i never really had what I would call GREAT results from any of them. He also suffers from eczema,  and the dermatologist told us that the 2 often go gand in hand. Thankfully now that he's 6, he rarely gets an eczema flare up and the cradle cap went away when he was about a year old. Following to see what has worked for others.
  • My DD had it pretty bad when she was a few months old, and had a ton of darker hair so you could see tons of flakes. Had gotten medicated shampoo from doc and that didn't work.....Coconut oil did the trick! Leave on for a few minutes then comb flakes out.

  • I did not want to do anything to interfere with my sons cradle cap, and then my mom said to use baby oil, so i tried it and kicked myself for not doing it sooner. amazing how quick and easy all the stuff came off.

  • I used baby oil on my first two kids, and it worked really well. The cradle cap didn't last long, maybe a month or so for each. In recent years I've started using coconut oil for a lot of things, and will be using it for cradle cap this time. I told my friend that had a baby a couple months ago to use coconut oil on her sons head, and it worked for her too. And her sons skin is super sensitive
  • Another random tip - when shampooing your baby's hair, rub the shampoo in your hands to get it sudsy before putting it on their head. We thought DS was getting cradle cap but it was just the shampoo sticking to his scalp!
  • Also, when brushing or combing, go against the way it grows. Pretty much comb backwards. But very lightly.
