Zoloft

Has anyone tapered down their dosage for Zoloft before? My PCP office is closed today, my OB doesn't control my script for it and I don't want to wait any longer... #impatient

I'm on 50mg a day and would like to taper that down to 10mg a day. Just not sure the best way to go about it. I know it needs to be a nice and slow transition...

Re: Zoloft

  • I was on Prozac for a long time and I actually stopped cold turkey which I don't recommend but it worked for me. It was a pretty crappy time but I had a good support system and got back on my feet. The doctor was definitely not happy when I told her what I did.

Honestly if I were you I'd wait until the office opens. Do they have an on call doctor for evenings/weekends? Or an message system maybe so you could get some sooner advice? I know it's hard to want to start right away but in the long run waiting 2 days for the weekend before you start tapering off your dose won't really change anything and I'm sure you'll feel better getting your doctors actual instructions and support.

@marriedhamstermom I know you are most likely right. 2 more days isn't going to do any more harm. I'm just over paranoid about it. I'm not trying to knock meds while PG, but I was on it with a pretty high does with my first son and he was born with hypospadias  - a birth defect on his penis/urethra. Deep down I feel like it was b/c of the Zoloft. I quit it cold turkey when I got BFP with #2 and that was NOT good. I don't want to bottom out again like that.

  • Keep taking it until you see your dr. Quitting cold turkey is BAD. I tried to do that with DS and it was horrid. I'm on 75 mg of Sertraline and my midwife ok'd it; she's the one who upped it for me during the winter.

I'm on 50 mg of Zoloft a day and have been since I was about 6 months pregnant with my last baby. I'm a worry wart when pregnant, so I'm currently trying to wean off. Definitely wait and talk to your doctor to find out what they want you to do. My OB wasn't very concerned at all about me taking it and left it up to me if I wanted to stop (wean, not cold turkey) taking it.

Id definitely wait to talk to your doctor. I think the lowest dose of Zoloft is 25mg? Most likely they'll have you cut down to that dosage, first. That's what my dr did when I weaned, anyway. I agree with others about NOT going cold turkey. I had no problem weaning slowly when I did it years ago.

Talk to the dr. Mine weren't too concerned I was on it and said it was up to me to stay on it during my last
pregnancy. They said to weigh the options of being on the med vs the anxiety being bad for the baby. I m/c but stopped the Zoloft anyway. I followed my Drs orders on tapering off but still had terrible side effects. I went back and they lowered it very slowly and it was much better!! Good luck!
  • Can you ask a pharmacist?
  • I haven't been on Zoloft for years but have been on multiple antidepressants - wean slowly. Going cold turkey will be horrible for you and could be stressful to boot - not something you want to experience any any point, never mind during pregnancy

  • I went on Zoloft in February this year (after my MC in December). I was up to 100 mg. I called my Dr as soon as I got my BFP (a Friday) and was told to cut back to 50mg. We previously talked about me weaning off after getting KU. I had an appointment the next Thursday and she said I could stop completely at that point but said if I could cut them into a fourth (25mg) to do that for a few days. I did it for one day but then stopped completely. So far I'm ok. I'm worried with my EDD of my loss approaching (Aug 10) and my coworker due July 16 that I might not be ok but remind myself I am KU and it's best for the baby. I have names of therapists if I need them.

  • Thank you for your experiences and advice. I'm sticking with my 50mg for now. My dr reassured me about the "potential birth defects" thing and I think I was just being irrational to think I could just give it up.
