Zofran

Has anyone been prescribed it for this pregnancy yet? Anyone avoiding it all together?

Re: Zofran

  • I took it a few times for DD and it worked great. Now, I've heard conflicting info about causing issues for pregnant women. I may not survive this MS without some relief and was wondering who was taking it or planning on it or who is against it all together.

  • I have gastroparesis, so I have a standing prescription for zofran. I haven't seen my OB yet, so we haven't really discussed it.

I take 25mg b6 three times a day (when I remember) and if I'm feeling bad I'll add a half or full unisom at night. It's OTC diclegis. That and minding my blood sugar (making sure it doesn't stay below 80 for too long)  seems to keep most of the sickness away. I carry the zofran as breakthrough medication and have needed it once. I think phenergan is maybe considered preferable in pregnancy now, so I'll ask in a week or so.
  • I took a LOT of Zofran with DD2 and a decent amount DD1. I had awful HG and when I got a positive with #2 my mw said "we can't let it get that bad again, start it now". That being said, I am trying REALLY hard to avoid it this go around and am doing the uni/b6 combo. DD1 has a small sacral dimple, which I can't help but wonder if it was my lack of nutrition in the 1st and 2nd tri.

  • I've had to take it with all 4 previous pregnancies and I'm sure with this one as well. I might give Diclegis a try and see how that works, but Zofran was my saving grace for sure.
  • I'm really hesitant to take it, but if this MS carries on the same way for a few more days there's no way I can carry on without it. I've only thrown up twice today, it's such an improvement so here's hoping.
  • I lived on zofran with DS, daily, I had MS until my third trimester, came out happy and healthy.
  • Take the zofran. There is no need to suffer if you don't have too! Lurking from Feb 16. I was on it both of my pregnancies until delivery for HG and both of my girls are just fine. I had the diclegis this last time and it worked much better! It took away the feeling of nausea all together unlike zofran that wears off.
  • I took zofran all through my first two pregnancies, and if this one is anything similiar I'll take it this time too.  I'm only just 5 weeks, so I'm barely feeling sick yet.  Probably take one more week before I feel like dying.
  • The FDA issued a warning about use in pregnancy I believe a few years ago.  It was linked to congenital issues and cleft pallet if I remember correctly.  It's an off label use for morning sickness.  I used it in 2005 with my 2nd pregnancy but won't be using it this time after reading about the risks.

  • It's very difficult to separate congenital issues linked to  severe morning sickness from congenitial issues linked to zofran usage. There's a new 2016 study mentioned (here)  that thinks the issue is HG or a history of HG.

Diclegis is a better first-line treatment, certainly.
  • My sister is a nurse practitioner and told me this is no longer approved for use during pregnancy due to potential birth defects. I'm just suffering through right now. I picked up some seabands and they seems to be helping.
