Maternity Clothes

A post I had last week about when to bring out the maternity clothes ended in a discussion about where to get maternity clothes. I figured I would start a discussion around maternity clothes in general for people to contribute to. What are some of your favorites when it comes to type of maternity clothes and where to get them?

Re: Maternity Clothes

  • Yes, I realize for some, this may be early still but I know some of us have started shopping and/or wearing maternity clothes so I figured it was applicable.

  • I've seriously just been getting these like, cheapo men's flannel shirts at thrift stores. I can wear them with comfy pants around the house or jeans when I go somewhere and do the whole 90s grunge look. Probably not the most fashionable thing ever but I have plenty of room to grow in them for now!

  • I loved full panel maternity pants - jeans, leggings, yoga pants, etc - especially once I had a bump.  To me they always felt like I was getting a little more belly support.  I have been wearing a lot of dresses on the weekends (can't wear them to work) and right now they are the most comfortable type of maternity wear for me.  As far as places, most of my clothes are from Motherhood Maternity and Old Navy with a couple of maternity/nursing stuff from target.  I really like the stuff I got at Motherhood, even though it is more expensive, because the quality is higher and everything is still in good shape for this pregnancy.  The Old Navy stuff is mostly new so I haven't seen how it will last but they have really good sales.  I got five items (dresses, shorts, a shirt, workout pants) for under $100 a few weeks ago.

Lularoe perfect tees are awesome maternity shirts, and Agnes & Dora is coming out with a new swing top that I can't wait for! I've received some hand me downs but haven't really bought anything yet. I have full shopping carts online at asos, h&m and old navy though!
  • I like buying from Old Navy and kohls.  I've found them to be reasonably priced and at least high enough quality to last me through the length of the pregnancy.  This time around, if I decide to buy any more tops, I'm going to make sure they're nursing compatible, so either button tops or easily movable necklines.  I ended up wearing mostly maternity clothes for the first few months after DD was born and when I had gone shopping last time around that hadn't been something I'd considered, so several of my shirts unfortunately ended up being pretty inconvenient to wear PP. as a STM I will plan ahead better!

  • I wore motherhood or old navy tanks through my first pregnancy. (October baby). When it was cold out, I added a cardigan. I wore my normal jeans and belly band. I also wore a bikini I already owned. Target has great $10 fold over yoga pants that I wore folded during the first tri, and over my belly during the third. It was a very low budget wardrobe...because I didn't work, so I could dress casual.
  • I like target and old navy. Old navy is having a pretty decent sale but it ends tonight- online only. Just stocked up on a couple leggings and short sleeve maternity shirts.

  • I work in a business casual office so most of my clothing has been pretty uncomfortable. I'm still wearing my dress pants with a belly band, but I've bought quite a few maternity shirts at Motherhood Maternity. I also picked up a few cute dresses for the summer when they were having a BOGO 50% off sale. I bought shorts too when they were BOGO for $5. If you can find sales or clearance items, MM really isn't too expensive (especially if you need dressier clothes for work). I've also picked up maternity tshirts at Target. They were on Cartwheel for 10% off and I love the material!
  • I'm just wearing bodycon and wrap dresses since it's summer--they're so easy to come by, but I'm really looking forward to Topshop's maternity line this fall when it's cooler out. The pants and shorts selection at Motherhood Maternity scarred me--it was so frumpy looking, and it looks like Topshop has a lot of half-decent skinny jeans and pencil skirts.

Has anyone found cute, empire wasted sun dresses? I don't wear form fitting dresses when not pregnant, and I definitely don't plan to start, but seriously, stripped super tight tank top dresses are all that exist.

  • @cjs260 PinkBlush has a lot of really cute empire-waist and not form fitting sundresses and casual dresses. They seem to be really focused on maxi dresses but there are a lot of shorter length ones in there as well.
  • @cjs260 The two dresses I bought at Old Navy recently were empire waist sundresses.  One is a chambray material and the other is gingham-ish.  No stripes ;)

  • Any thoughts on the best belly band? I'd like to get one soon. My pants are still fitting ok, but I can't stand the feeling of them on my belly.

I just wear my regular maxi dresses. And I wear my normal leggings and yoga pants, then just fold the waistband down if needed. I normally always wear tunic length shirts, so I just wore those, too. I never bought actual maternity clothes. That was with the last pregnancy, though. Probably it'll be the same this time.

  • @susykat77 I think it's different for everyone. I'm obsessed with mine. It's been an absolute life saver with my dress pants and skinnier jeans. However my best friend absolutely hated it and felt like she could never keep it in a comfortable spot. I would suggest picking one up at Target and trying it out. If you don't like it, you can always return it!

@canavara PinkBlush FTW. Jumped right on over there and bought a dress and a shirt on flash sale for $50!

@ashanne88 I've looked in my Old Navy store and their maternity selection was TERRIBLE. I'll head over there online and check it out!

    Thanks to you both!

  • @cjs260 I love Old Navys maternity dresses because I feel like they have more than just stripes! But my old navy pulled their maternity section from the store last month. I cried a little bit. So I'm in the online boat too! Jerks. Bring back the maternity clothes!
Our target recently cut their maternity section in half too, to make more room for housewares and I'm so mad.
  • I've definitely found online is the way to go when maternity clothes shopping. Unfortunately I'm in need of some khaki shorts for an event in a week and I don't have any in my bucket from last time. I'm leaving town on Monday for a week long trip for work so I don't really want to rely on ordering online in case they don't fit. I'll be hunting local places this weekend in hopes of finding something that will work. I broke out the maternity jeans this week for work (we have a special week of jeans right now) and will probably be breaking out the maternity dress clothes for work next week, especially for my travel dates. Need to take stock of what I have to get me through the next week. To top it off, most people don't know so I'm still trying to no look pregnant so trying to stay away from the maternity tops...I may just be telling people next week :)

  • @Carly79 I have brand new khaki shorts on today! They're from Target.

@katesmama0706 My target has literally 5 racks of maternity clothes. And it stinks because my MIL gave me $100 in gift cards specifically to use for maternity clothes. So, I'm online there, too, haha!

  • @katesmama0706 I will have to check out Target. I looked a week ago (real quick not for anything specific) and don't remember seeing any. My Target is hit or miss on the maternity stuff. I was a Sears a few weeks ago and it looks like the one we have here is discontinuing their maternity section in the store so they had most of their selection on clearance. I am going to check them out because they had a few khaki shorts that I should have just bought then. I just didn't want to jinx anything. Otherwise it's a trip to a mall about 30 minutes away (not too bad) to check out the nearest Motherhood.

  • @cjs260 ours used to be huge. Now it's a rack of shirts, one of dresses and a half rack of pants. I was like "seriously?!"
  • @cjs260 I should have mentioned I bought mine online...there are no maternity clothes except target where I live.  The selection is WAY better online.

PSA- 40% off on Liz Lange tee and tank dresses at target with code BUMP40. Expires 6/25
  • I should have broke out the maternity jeans this morning...I almost did and was like "nah". Now I'm sitting in my office with by pants unbuttoned.

With my DS I was preggo during the summer, so it was a lot of maxi dresses (mostly from Target, Kohl's, etc). I still have a lot of dresses I've been wearing this week. I'm kind of dreading winter. We have a no leggings rule at work and seriously, for the winter I have no idea what else to wear. They may have to break that for a large, hormonal woman.

Ugh. That sucks, I'm sorry. Maybe they will bend the rules for the pregnant women of your workplace.

  • PSA-Old Navy has 50% off most of their maternity shorts/pants right now. I got shorts for a trip to Disney at the end of July for $14.97 cheaper than the non-Preggo shorts.
  • Last couple pregnancies I have bought my clothes at ROSS and also off of Zulily.com loved all of them. I know target has cute clothes, but kind of expensive for me.

  • I have been wearing my jeans around with a hair elastic wrapped around the button and looped through the hole as a little "extender". So much better. I don't think I'm quite ready for maternity clothes yet but when I start shopping I can't wait to buy from ASOS. So many cute dresses!! https://www.asos.com/women/maternity/cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=5813&via=top

  • Update on my personal search- Target blows! At least for me. Lots of super cute stuff but omg my boobs will NEVER be big enough to fit those shirts!! I did pick up a great pair of over belly leggings and a couple of ruched side stretchy tee shirts but everything else I bought was just a size up and flowy from the regular section (because my work shirts are already a little tight on my belly- eek!)

Next stop H&M, everything there runs stupid small usually which is great for my normally A cup chest that's just barely eeking out of my B cup bra at this point
  • For right now, I've been wearing a lot of stretchy knee length skirts. I have tons of oversized tops, a style I love, that will probably fit for along time. And I wear maxi dresses. However, I went shopping for jeans for the first time and my god it was difficult! The jeans at Target were way too baggy in the crotch area. So hard to explain but it just didn't look right on me. Since I no longer know my size, it's hard to order online becaus Old Navy and Gap don't carry maternity in store, neither does H&M but I went to H&M anyways for some tops and miraculously found some maternity Jeans on sale even though they don't carry maternity clothes in store either. Perhaps they used to??? Anyways, we all know their sizing runs small so I grabbed a few different size to try and the fit was really good!!! I bought one that fit now and one that will fit later. Now that I know my size, I can order more styles online. I hope it works out for everyone else struggling to find jeans.

I went maternity shopping for the first time yesterday and I was so surprised that almost none of the stores had any sort of maternity section actually in store. I am only 12 weeks but was just looking for a simple maternity dress to do all of my weekly bump pictures in. I was at motherhood maternity and almost done looking around (without finding anything) when the sales person came up asking if I was shopping for myself or someone else. Clearly my pregnancy hormones have taken over as that question made me so angry! I very abruptly finished shopping and left to online shop instead. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best place to get maternity jeans?
  • I like the two pairs I got from old navy.

  • I have three pairs of Jessica Simpson capris from Motherhood. I imagine they fit like the jeans. I really like them a lot, comfy and on trend right now. I have problems with the old navy jeans fitting funny and I got a pair from target, hoping to grow to like them more.
  • I've had good luck ordering online! I live in Wyoming and we basically have no maternity clothes here, apparently. So I got a bunch of pants on Walmart.Com that run true to size! They have tons of options, and are only like $15 to $20 each!

Then I found a website called Swap.com that sells used maternity clothes for decent prices! I ordered a pair of skinny jeans and 2 shirts for $36. Haven't gotten them yet but am hopeful!

Kohls.Com is decent too if you can catch the sales and use their Kohl's cash.
  • I found the online experience for Motherhood to be a lot more manageable than in-store. Perhaps it was because I was visiting a store 5 hours away from me, and I felt pressure to figure out EVERYTHING I needed, but it was just too overwhelming for pregnant me. Once I found out they would ship to me from an online retailer, and I could sit on the couch and sort stuff out, it made a huge difference.

Plus, they do have really good sales. I saved over $100 by shopping when they had a sale on.
