OB not confirming with blood test

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on the boards but this is the first post I'm starting. I got a BFP this past weekend and called my doctor's office to let them know/make an appointment. I asked if I needed to come in for a blood test to confirm and the receptionist told me the HPT is accurate enough to confirm. I was surprised since so many here seem to have gotten blood tests. I guess I wanted that confirmation even though I'm already 2 days after my missed period and I've still been using the Wondfo tests and have a clear positive.

Anyone not get a blood test?

  • Only my RE did the blood test. My OB just did a quick pee test. They are basically the same ones at the dollar store.
  • My ob also did not do a confirmation test and just said to trust the OTC test

  • Ok, this makes me feel a lot better! I know the HPT is highly accurate but I guess I'm still a bit in disbelief that I'm pregnant. Thanks all!

    TW: loss mentioned

This is my fourth pregnancy. I never had betas done for my first two pregnancies. I had betas done with my third because it was conceived by a birth control failure (paragard). It ended in miscarriage. I just had betas done with this bfp because of my loss last time around. Standard is to not do betas. It's really more or less peace of mind for those with high risks.

I didn't have bloodwork until my first appointment at 6 weeks. Its not standard unless you have a history of infertility and/or loss.

  • I did not receive a blood or urine test for any of my other pregnancies. It was assumed I took the test correctly. At my first appointment they did other blood work.

I had betas tested for this pregnancy because it was IVF.
  • I only had a urine test and it was the same cheapie you use at home.  No exam until 8 weeks and still no bw at that point.  I didn't get my confirmation until my US at 12 weeks.

  • No bloodwork to confirm either of my pregnancies. I think you'll find (and I was initially surprised about this) that you're more on your own first tri in general. If you're not high risk, you may just have an OB check in around 8-10 weeks and your first NT ultrasound at 12 weeks. But if you have any concerns or questions, I would definitely encourage you to contact your OB in the meantime.

  • It's reassuring to know it's common not to have a blood test. It seemed like in the positive pregnancy test thread there were so many people that got blood work to confirm so I wasn't sure. I think I also have a small fear that I'll go to the first apt and they'll tell me I'm not pregnant.

  • I had blood work with my first, but it's because I called the office and said "I need blood work to see if I'm pregnant." I just thought that's what they did. Lol. I didn't even tell them I'd had a positive home test because I thought they'd want their own confirmation. This time I just called and told them I had a positive home test and needed to be seen for pregnancy. They scheduled me for my first regular appointment. No other testing required.
  • Ugh....those "Stupid" blood tests are to verify your blood type, whether or not you're RH negative or positive, my Dr. also included the test for cystic fibrosis in there (a very serious condition) and also to check my progesterone levels and TSH levels. A pee stick can tell if you have HCG in your system and a sonogram with a HB is WAAAYYYYY more reassuring and important than knowing what your hcg levels are.

  • My ob only ordered one at 7 weeks because I'm rh negative and at risk for blood type incompatibility
  • My OB did not originally do a blood test. She only did one due to some bleeding I had and that was just to check that my levels / numbers were rising like they should.

  • I am on my 3rd pregnancy that seems to be going good so far and have had bllod work confirmation each time but am high risk and have had 4 loses. So it depends on the situation I guess
  • I have my first appointment in the morning. They said no blood test
  • I got a blood test to confirm pregnancy, but not one of the detailed ones that some women get. It's essentially a "positive/negative" test for hcg in the blood, so Kaiser said I could ask for it in the lab whenever I wanted it. It's not cheap (mine was $40), but I needed that reassurance before my actual appointment.
