Anyone contemplating cloth diapers?

This is baby #4 for us and I have cloth diapered my last 2 but never during the newborn phase.  Working on convincing DH to do cloth for newborns this time around.  Likely going to pull the "this is the last one and I want to do it" card.  I would love to help anyone along the way if you are thinking about cloth.  I love it and honestly don't find it hard or disgusting.  Happy to answer questions!

Re: Anyone contemplating cloth diapers?

  • I'm going to do flats with this one. I didn't start cd'ing DS until he was 6 months. We don't have the money to buy nb cd, so flats it will be. I have a bunch from when he was little.
  • Loading the player...
  • After meconium ended we tried CD for the first two months with DS. We did prefolds, flannel inserts, etc like by the time we were done he was basically in the splits and was still getting pee burns. We just gave up because it was a crazy amount more work and messing him up. I think pockets are probably easier
  • This will be my first and I've been thinking about doing cloth.

  • I wanted to do cloth with our first but our daycare doesn't do this so I didn't want to waste the money getting a stash started.

  • I'm on the fence. We actually attempted to switch over my 1.5 year old a couple months back and it didn't go so well. I'm having a hard time deciding which brands and styles to go with. We started with G diapers but when they arrived and I looked at how it all fit together it looked ucomfortable to me and my DD clearly felt the same.
  • I would love to but I know H will take some convincing! We'll also be doing daycare and they may or may not be open to it. Would there be any benefit in doing it just for my ML (12 weeks) and on weekends or would that just be a waste of money?
  • I've been thinking about it. This will be our first, but I've had friends who did it and have me intrigued. If you decide to cd your newborn, can you post again with what system you end up going with!?
  • This is my first and I've always thought I'd like to cloth diaper but it's hard to think about justifying the expense for something that might be a total FTM pipe dream
  • I wanted to CD my DD, but DH said he would have nothing to do with diapers if we used CD.  Little did I know he really wouldn't have much of anything to do with them anyway or I probably would have pushed through and done it.  When we had DS I started doing research, but I got overwhelmed by the options and with the two of them being 18 months apart, I didn't have the energy to sift through it all. Do you think it would still make economical sense to do it for one kid?  I know my daycare doesn't have a problem with CD.  How did you decide which ones to get?

  • Me!!! We plan to cloth diaper full time. My SIL has done it, so I had a little practice with my nephew, and I may have already accumulated a stash. Ahem.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • We have always CD'd although we did mostly pockets and some pre folds and this time we plan on sticking with pre folds! We found them much more efficient, and a better price.

  • Well be doing cloth! Fitteds and wool covers, maybe an AIO for overnights. FST + wool cover for newborn stage post meconium, then OS fitteds and covers til potty training. We're toying with the idea of EC, but we're pretty flexible on that.

As far as wash routines go, did you do the Fluff Love & CD Science route or would you recommend something different?
  • I clothed DD starting around 4 months and love it!  We use pockets and they are so simple.  We do use disposables for overnight because when I used a booster in the cloth, they were just too bulky.

DD will just be 21 months when LO is born, so I'll likely start the new baby in disposables too. I don't have a newborn stash. Hopefully before LO gets too old, DD will be out of them.

I have 25, which is a great amount for 1, but definitely wouldn't be enough for 2.
  • We have lots of time along the way to chat about systems and such.  My OS stash is a variety- AIOs, AI2/hybrids,  and pockets.  I started when #2 was allergic to all disposablea and haven't turned back since.  I have a large variety of brands(smart bottoms, best bottoms, grovia, bum genius, Kawaii, rumparooz, fuzzibunz....). My plan for newborn stash is a combination of pre folds, fitteds, and maybe a few AIOs.  Most of what I have read with AIOs for newborns have absorbency issues.  I found a cloth store today going out of business and bought some rumparooz NB covers for 30%off.  That will be my start for now!

We cloth diapered our first daughter after about the first month till she was trained. I am planning on using cloth again this time but buying some newborn prefolds to start from the newborn phase.

  • I used cloth 17 years ago when my oldest was born. I did it because I was a broke single mom trying to save money. I folded my own. I didn't with my 13 year old but I plan in it with this one.
  • I'm considering cloth diapering, is anyone willing to explain the process or system, or just give me a good place to start? I'm completely lost
  • Here are a couple of links that I found this morning:
    www.bynature.ca/cloth-diapering-start.html
    http//www.kellyscloset.com/what-do-i-need-to-get-started-cloth-diapering_ep_209-1.html

When I decided to cloth diaper with our first I was overwhelmed by using cloth for a newborn and decided to start when she was older with one size pocket diapers. Then I eventually added AIO's, fitteds and wool and prefolds.
This time around I will be using cloth as soon as we get home from the hospital (hopefully).

  • This is my second and we will also be doing cloth. After trying a lot of different styles we realized we like prefolds and fitteds best. We solely buy Green Mountain Diapers and Thirsties covers. I am so happy to have decided to cloth and excited to do it with #2. :)

  • I've been cloth diapering my 10 month old since she was 6 weeks old and we love it!! We will be clothing our newborn too. I follow fluff love university wash guidelines and have no problems!

I would like to cloth diaper from the get go and need to think about how to sell this idea to hubby! Can anyone help me understand the differences btwn pockets, fitted, aio?

All about cloth diapers is a blog with lots of different cloth diaper reviews and photos. I found it helpful to see them in use, so I liked the site!

  • We started as soon as the meconium passed with DS#1 - he is now 11 months old.  We started using disposables ( Bambo nature - soft and eco friendly) for overnights once I figured out that changing him every time he woke up made him wake up more in the middle of the night - I think that was around 5 months or so.  DS#1 had every newborn skin issue - so that sealed the deal for us to commit to cloth diapering. We use the all in ones (bum genius) though they were pretty bulky in the newborn phase so I preferred the fitteds at that time (kissaluvs) for fit not so much for absorbency.

We plan to cloth diaper for this baby too - crap that means I need to double my stash!
  • I am soooo bummed. This is a surprise pregnancy (my daughter is 6) and I just sold my entire stash 2 months ago!!! So I'm back to square one but I want to try from NB this time too!

We cloth diapered our son from 4 months to potty training - just before he turned 2.
We are going to continue with cloth for the new baby.  I just need to get some new born fluff
  • juzzojuzzo member
I did with my last one, but we quit later.. Just because I got out of the routine and now he freaks (too big!) when I try. Anyway, I think we did disposables until the circumcision was healed, then it was fine. I did disposables overnight because I was too out of it in the middle of the night to mess with them.
    I digress...

We did cloth from 4 months on with my first. I loved it! I will definitely do it again. Towards the end we were constantly battling yeast so I gave up just a month or two shy of her potty training.
I used pockets, mostly cheapies, and charcoal bamboo inserts.

We started using cloth around 2-3 months  with DS and did up until a year when I started working again. My son had crazy blowouts and cloth diapers were the only thing that solved it those first few months! We used prefolds, inserts, and pockets, along with a few AIO, but I found myself preferring the pockets! Now that I'm back home with DS and will be with future LO, I'm wanting to transition back to using cloth. My question is @scottipino how do you continue to cloth diaper after they start eating more solid foods etc. What are your cleaning/rinsing methods once they're past 1 year?

CD after solids is easy.  I just did the dunk and swish in the toilet. I also had a dedicated scrub brush to use on the stickier ones lol  but it was pretty simple.  I didn't need a sprayer and don't really think they are necessary

Ha ha,  I kept pushing off trying to sell ours.  I cloth diapered all 3 of mine and surprise #4 would be too.  I have to find my whole stash and adjust to a new washing machine,  lol.

I'm stuck in the quote box!! But that's so great you did! Maybe this one will be a boy and I wouldn't needed a whole new scheme anyway? ;)

Not gonna lie, the whole dunking & swishing in the toilet gives me the heebie jeebies.
  • I use a sprayer and a spraypal- helps keep the yuckies in the toilet.  It honestly isn't that hard though when they start solids.  Especially if your kid has the perfectly plopable poops

My plan is the prefolds and covers for the newborn stage, then switch to pockets.  Cloth diapers are so freaking cute.  I love the idea of having a rainbow of colors. Plus, I'm going to try to be a SAHM.  So this will help with spending less money.

This will be #3 and the third in cloth diapers. I cloth from newborn. I never bought newborn diapers. My second was only 6 lbs 12 Oz and I still got away with size 1 all in ones with no leaks. I use one bamboo insert until about 6 months and then put in two.

ETA: my first two went about 3 months in diapers at the same time. They wore the same ones. My oldest was 2yrs and 8 months when my second was born.

  • I can't dunk and swish either. I just use a piece of toilet paper to take off whatever doesn't "plop"!

  • I've been contemplating cloth diapers. I've heard they're a little more hard work, but worth it not only for the money you save, but also the environmental benefits. I'm a first time mom with this one so I have a little bit more research to do, but I really like the idea. I have a close friend who cloth diapered her little girl and said she loved it so that's a plus in my books :)
  • Cloth diapers are the best- I highly recommend them to anyone who is curious about them.  They've saved us a lot of money, are adorable and no more trips to the store to pick up diapers!!
