Pregnant after a Loss

Baby is two weeks behind in growth, so scared

Hi everyone,

This is my second pregnancy, lost my first one on March 18th of this year. Got pregnant fast and was so excited....but went in for an ultrasound yesterday becuase of some cramping, and they wanted to check for a cyst. Instead we found that baby is two weeks behind in growth, it is about 4 weeks instead of 6.

This happened my last pregnancy as well, two weeks behind where we thought it would be.   We realized later was a bad sign since we lost it at 11 weeks and found out it was only 6 weeks in growth.  I am heartbroken and so down. I know baby still has a chance, but I can't believe this is happening again. Baby is so small.

Has this happend to you? Does baby have a chance of still growing and catching up on its growth? What did you do when they said you have low levels or a small baby? They took my blood yesterday and they will take my blood again Friday to see if my levels rise. So, so sad, loosing hope.

I'm so sorry for the stress your under right now, but just try to keep in mind that everything is probably just fine. This happened to me this time (baby measured 2 weeks behind what we thought) and at our follow up u/s baby measured perfect at about a week ahead.

Is your EDD estimated from your lmp? It's possible that you ovulated later than originally thought. Are you going to have a follow up u/s in a week or so?

FX, creepy internet hugs,  and sticky baby dust for you! I hope everything turns out better than expected!

  • I haven't had this exact situation but I have had two early ultrasounds that didn't show "what should have been there". For one I went at 6+3 and there should have been a detectable hb but the ultrasound only showed an empty sac with what could maybe have been early blood flow to it. I went back a week later and there was baby, measuring right on track with a hb. Early ultrasounds can be good but also nerve wracking. I have a love hate relationship with them. By the way, that baby is due in two weeks. So that ultrasound didn't give good insight into what the future held. I hope it all works out for you!  The beginning is so hard.

  • Thanks guys! It really helps hearing from you. I got good news today: the nurse called and said my hormone levels from yesterday's blood sample was 4,000, and she said that is right on track with a 4-5 week baby. I go in tomorrow to see if the numbers rise, but it is at least a sign that baby has a chance and my hormones are not to blame. Praying hard, I will update soon!
  • Both my living children measured 2 weeks behind from day one my son was supposed to be due April 30th 2009 but he measured small and they changed his date to May 15th 2009. My daughter was due September 15th 2012 but she again measured small and they moved her to September 30th 2012. My theory is I ovulate super late in my cycle so I should always anticipate a change in date even this time our 3rd I was due October 5th they moved me to the 17th.
I hope everything works out for you.
  • Thanks! Got my numbers just now, I've increased from 4,000 to 4,436....its good I have increased but I wonder if I increased enough. I'll talk to the nurse today and see if they are positive.

When my numbers were increasing that slowly they had me come in that very day for an ultrasound. They said they should be doubling. Don't want to scate you, but they might want you back again. But it seems like doctors don't follow a standard in what they view as concerning or not. HCG is a headache. I'mean  not even sure it is worth the worry it causes since it is such a ... variable variable.

  • Great news!!!! So happy for you!  My baby didn't even show up until after 6 weeks so I'd say a beating heart at 5 is great!

  • Sad update: went in yesterday for anther ultasound, and baby's heart was beating irregularly. They scheduled me to come back first thing Monday morning, but this morning I woke up with spotting and heavy, painful cramping. Looks like I'm going through another miscarriage. Many blessings to you ladies, and best of luck in your pregnancy. I hope to be back on the boards soon with, God willing, my miracle baby.
  • @ghunter16 I am so so sorry.
