Staples or stitches??

For all the other mommas out there who have to do a scheduled c section.... are you going with stitches or staples??? I'm having a hard time deciding which would be better!

Re: Staples or stitches??

  • I didn't get to choose when I had mine (with my second) But I had the stitches that dissolve/fall out on their own.

  • Well I didn't want a cesarean but I have to for certain reasons. Soo I wasent expecting to ha e to recover from major surgery  or have a scar, so I actually brought it up bc I had heard if doctors know you may have more children they don't do as good of a job sewing you up as in making it look nice or anything since they will be going back in.. and she said she could do stitches or staples.  Staples kinda creep me out but the scar seems to be alot less noticeable. It's not as thick looking as stitches..just curious about it

I didn't have stitches for my csection, but I did for surgery on my shoulder and it is the worst scar ever.  You can even see where the staples were.  There were multiple I ncisions.  Some did heal better than the other, but you can see the spots from the staples on both.

I've had surgery twice, once to have my thyroid removed and one c-sec. Both times, I had the dissolving stitches. I learned after my thyroidectomy that my skin makes keloid scars. So I was pretty worried about the c-sec scar, but during this pregnancy I have had every nurse, Dr and even the ultrasound tech tell me what a good job the Dr did on my incision. It healed nicely and it's small. I've never heard of Dr's not doing a good job if they know you're having more, but I think it will depend on the Dr and how your skin heals.
Just look into both options and see which one would be best for you. Good luck

  • I didn't have a choice as mine was emergency but the dr apparently used both dissolvable staples and stitches, really nice since nothing had to be removed. Staples underneath and stitches on the surface. For the record 2.5 yrs later you can't see it unless you are looking for it.
  • I did not have a choice and ended up with staples.  They were not to bad.  The scar will be on the under side of my tummy so I can't really see it anyway
  • I had staples (no choice), they were painless to take out. My scar also did that whole ugly keloid thing, so it's bumpy and huge. Don't think it has anything to do with the dr doing a bad job, just how my body healed. Luckily, it's so low that no one would ever see it unless I was showing them a lot more of myself... Not even a low rise bathing suit!
  • Internal stitches and external glue, just had my 3rd csection and two weeks later my scar looks wonderful!
  • It seems like planning to have more kids would make more sense to stitch and suture up REALLY well since you don't want that incision popping with any subsequent babies. When my sister had brain surgery they weren't loose goosey with her incision, even though they knew they would eventually have to go back in and open up again. Close it up right and tight!!
  • If you plan on having more kids and want to try for a vaginal birth, make sure they do two layers of stitches or a layer of stitches and also glue. Helps make chances for a VBAC more successful and greatly reduces the chance of uterine rupture.
