Extreme Breathlessness?

My next OB appointment isn't for another 3 weeks, but this week (15 weeks) I've been more out of breath than usual. Standing is what does me in. And today sitting isn't relieving it. It's accompanied by dizziness and sometimes slight blackouts when I stand up from sitting/laying down.

Does anyone else experience this, and is it related to anything in particular? My blood pressure has been normal so far but I only get it checked at the doctor's office (after sitting in the waiting room...)

Any advice would be so greatly appreciated, it's starting to scare me.

Re: Extreme Breathlessness?

  • Even though your next scheduled appt isn't for 3 weeks that doesn't mean you have to just wait. If you're experiencing symptoms that are (rightly so) worrying you and making you question your health then call your OBGYN. Either they will make a new appt to see you sooner or at least be able to point you in the right direction of how they want you to proceed. I wouldn't keep waiting if you're blacking out and having trouble breathing just from standing.

  • I am experiencing this as well and was instructed to go to emerg. Fortunately it wasn't anything immediately life-threatening in my case, though it did result in my appointment being moved up 2.5 weeks, but it can be. Call your care provider. Describe your symptoms as you have here, along with anything else concerning (especially mention if you are experiencing pain, redness, or swelling in one leg, or pain when you breathe deeply. If you are experiencing those, be sure to say so.)

I've had three similar sounding episodes over the last couple months. But it's mostly lightheaded and then dizzy like I may faint. I've always been able to sit and put my head down before it gets to that point. They all are from just standing for a long period of time. If I'm walking then I'm fine. I have an appointment Friday and plan to mention it. Mine have been so spaced out that it hasn't worried me too much.

  • I would definitely call the doctor, @PrettyPalomino. Like PPs have mentioned, the symptoms you listed could be serious and I'm sure your OB will want to take a look. Also, you can go to any CVS and get your blood pressure measured at any time.

  • Agree with PP that you should call. The worst that can happen is they say don't worry and maybe give you some tips for dealing with it in the next few weeks til your appointment. But if it is something concerning they (and you!) will be glad you called and didn't wait.

  • Thanks all! As with @lrg14 they're kinda spaced out (I'm good now) which makes me think I'm worrying without a just cause. But it's no joke, esp if it's to do with blood pressure or something. I will definitely drop into a pharmacy to test my BP in the moment next time. Glad to know I'm not alone!

  • I have had these problems in the mornings with both pregnancies. For me, it ended up being a low blood pressure thing...but I agree with everyone else, it is worth talking to the Dr's!

  • Took my BP at the drugstore. I just happened to be there and also felt dizzy, it was 107/68 which I think for me is low. Definitely mentioning it to the OB

Are you drinking enough water? These can be symptoms of dehydration. They can also be symptoms of low iron or anemia. But they can also be symptoms of something more serious. I definitely agree with the others that you should call your provider.
