Weight

This is my first pregnancy.  Wondering when you guys started showing?.. Actually showing, not this showbloating, as I've been calling it. I'm almost 9 weeks and wake up super flat- bellied but by 5pm I look 4 months pregnant!!

Re: Weight

  • The most honest answer - it's different for everyone.  Sorry I don't have something more specific!

This example is a bit extreme, but it definitely shows that different women carry their pregnancies in different ways!

  • Scientifically speaking, your uterus doesn't grow above your pelvis until 12 weeks so "technically" that's when it's no longer bloat but actual baby. That being said, every body is different and will show at different times. Subsequent pregnancies will show sooner. I started showing around 16 weeks with my first.

I'd have to reference my bump pictures, but if I recall correctly, I started to really show with my dd when I was about 15 weeks.

  • I barely had a belly with dd1 at 20 weeks. With this one, I've already gotten comments.
  • If anything, I feel I have lost weight initially and can fit back into my uk size 10 jeans. I'm only 6 weeks but have lost maybe 2kg since I found out I'm pregnant. I have a fairly decent diet and appetite so I figured I've just lost water retention.

  • I think I was about 12-14 weeks with my first before I looked more pregnant and less fat. Lol. This time around I have popped super super fast

How much you should gain depends on your starting weight/BMI. Your doctor will let you know the range that's appropriate for you.

I I like this calculator since it breaks it down by trimester/weeks

  • @katiebartton great tool!!

    I weighed 122lbs - 5'10 at conception
    And now I'm at 133lbs at 9weeks

Has anyone else gained 10lbs+ over 2months+

I started out at 98 lbs with my first pregnancy. I'm 5'3". My midwife wanted me to gain 40 lbs. I was 137 lbs the day I gave birth.
I'm 102 lbs right now at 7 weeks. The nurse I spoke to the other day at my first appointment told me that the doctor will probably recommend I gain 25-30 lbs.

@newmama801 I gained about 20-25 pounds with DS and I was at pre-pregnancy weight within 7-8 weeks granted I am small framed and have a fast matabolism, I started around 110-114 and ended at 135. By my 6 week postpartum appointment I was at 118.  This time I started around the same weight as before so we will see how it goes this time around :D

  • Awesome! Thanks guys! We have our first appointment on Monday!
  • Y'all are lucky. I was 130 when I got pregnant. I figured I'd gain like crazy BC my mom is small but gained 70 both times. I gained 55, dd is almost 11 months and I had lost 40. So I was 145 (ugh) and somehow I'm so bloated that I'm already 155
  • My weight always fluctuates so much (even before pregnancy) that its hard to pin down exactly what I averaged pre-pregnancy. But I'm 6w2d Ive gained 4 lbs, I think, which is bad.

  • I'm always one that messes up the bmi theory. People guess my weight at around 130 ish. I weigh 160. I was hoping to get to 155 or 150 before pregnancy, but oh well. I've never gotten below 150 as an adult and been healthy.
I've gained 1lb so far, so I'm happy. My goal is to gain no more than 3 or so by 12 weeks. I think you just don't know the end result until you're there. But you know your body, so follow that.
  • I've gained 5 pounds at 8 weeks - I'm pretty sure some of it has to be my enormous (for me) boobs and the giant cyst on my ovary. The other 3ish pounds are definitely from eating. I keep thinking "surely if I just eat one more thing I will finally be full" and no such luck. I think I'm just going to have to eat my normal amount and just get used to being hungry. Otherwise I'll gain way too much the way I am eating.

@mylitta I am exactly the same! According to a couple doctors I'm considered to have 'dense bones', because I weight around 160s but no one ever believes me when I tell them. I do have a bit extra fat on me, so I wanted to get to my pre-marriage weight which was 150/155s before getting pregnant. I think that's when I was at my healthiest. I've been bouncing around 160-168 the last year...

Although I was weighing between 167/169 before I got pregnant, now I am weighing between 164/166 at 7 weeks... Although I think that is the "water weight" from cutting out all the high sodium foods.

  • I had to wear maternity clothes with my daughter at 12 weeks and had a definite bump at 15 weeks.  I am 9 weeks now and I still have a lot of the loose belly from my daughter so when I wore my maternity jeans today it looks like I'm showing if I don't consciously suck in my belly which is uncomfortable to do.

  • @HJ.Morgan I completely understand. I have a little extra myself, which I was trying to work on. I've been around 165-168 for the last few months. Got to 161 and got my bfp. No one had ever said anything about dense bones to me, but I don't know.

Though I have to say. I see nothing on me. Showing nothing and little to no bloat. Only momentary when it does show. I think my little bit of extra will cover when I do start to show, as it hangs out right at my belly only.

I was 140 my last pregnancy and checked into l&d at 207.

Edit... what the heck... the bump keeps eating the rest of my replies. Grrr!! I went on to say I lost it in 9 months pp, and lost 40 in 2 weeks. A ton was swelling for me. So my point is everyone is different. Still hoping for just 30 this time though.

  • I'm a FTM and so in my mind I was comparing myself to my mom and sisters when they were pregnant. My mom never showed until her 7th month (even though she had 6 kids) and both my sisters didn't show until about their 7th month with their first. In fact, my oldest sister went to the doctor and said she felt kicking and the doctor laughed and said she couldn't feel kicking because he thought she was only one or two months pregnant - nope she was much farther along and the baby was indeed kicking!

I was looking in the mirror last night and thought -  my gosh I must be having twins or something!! I look like I'm 3-4 months pregnant and I'm only 9 1/2 weeks! I weighed myself and as of memorial day weekend I had only gained about a pound.

  • Last pregnancy I was for real showing at 18 weeks (before that I was showing from 6 pm on but not at all in the morning... only after dinner!). I started at a healthy weight for me and gained only 5 lbs by week 20. I ate healthy my whole pregnancy and was active,  but still gained another 45 lbs between weeks 20 - 40! My mom gained roughly the same amount both of her pregnancies eating fast food 2x a day.  I'm starting at a lower weight this time and have been so sick that I've lost a few pounds,  but I believe strongly in genetics and feel like I'll be up another 50 by the end.

It does come off though. Give yourself time- remember,  it took 9 months to put it on,  it probably won't fall back off overnight.  My body is a different shape than it used to be,  but that's not a bad thing!  My legs were super muscular when ds was between 6 - 11 months and I was squatting down all the time with him- it didn't even feel like exercise lol.
  • I started my last pregnancy around 160 and I know I hit at least 210. I was thankful they used the metric system hen the weighed me at the hospital. I just couldn't go a week without gaining a pound. I am at 166 now but would have guessed 165 before I got pregnant.... I hope it stays at 166 for a while but I have been downing carbs like crazy the last few days and ginger ale trying to not be nauseous so there is that...
  • I was 20 weeks before I was really showing with DS. I was 160 when I got pregnant, which was slightly over weight for my heigh 5' 2". My morning sickness lasted from 7-16 weeks and I actually ended up losing 10lbs, I couldn't keep anything down. I eventually gained those 10 back, and was 178 the day I checked into L&D. Before I lost the weight, my dr had wanted me to try and gain between 20-25lbs.

This is time I'm starting at 155lbs, so I would imagine my dr will again want me around 20-25lbs. I haven't gained any weight yet, I'm 7 weeks today, but I'm far more active now then I was when I got pregnant with DS. The morning sickness and nausea have kicked in this week so we will see what that does to me this time.

With each pregnancy, I only gained 10-12lbs, which was fine for me. I am obese to begin with and then I lost so much weight both pregnancies from being sick. It was no fun really after delivery though "only losing" 10lbs lol. But your doctor will give you recommendation for healthy weight gain for your BMI.

  • I'm finding tracking weight gain to be so confusing during this pregnancy. I was doing crossfit 3-5 times a week before pregnancy, weighed ~125 pounds, and a fair amount of that was muscle... I've cut back to going 1-3 times a week and have reduced the intensity of my workouts a bit and have been losing some muscle mass as a result (more dense than fat). So now, even with bloat and slight bump, I weigh 123 pounds... So 2 pounds lost total at 10.5 weeks. It's been a week since I've puked and my appetite is back in a good place so the lack of weight gain is certainly not for lack of eating...
  • I'm trying not to over analyze weight gain but it's hard!! I've always been pretty active and have always eaten very healthy, except for candy...I'll have a bit of candy most days, but otherwise I don't eat out often, don't eat baked goods except maybe once a month. I do have chronic constipation and get very bloated when I eat certain foods and I'm supposed to be on the FODMAP diet to control this (google it, it's a miserable diet), but I don't follow it strictly because it's so constricting, even limiting my healthy nutrients. So now I feel like I've gained 5 pounds or more in the last 6 weeks, but I can't tell if it's mostly water/bloat, or actual weight gain. I'm guessing probably just bloating??? I haven't been eating extra and have been choosing even more healthy options than usual. I haven't been working out as often, but I can't really gain that much weight that fast unless it's bloat, right!??

That being said...I read this is the common break down for a woman of normal weight gaining the average 30lbs:
    • Baby: 7.5 pounds
    • Placenta: 1.5 pounds
    • Amniotic fluid: 2 pounds
    • Uterine enlargement: 2 pounds
    • Maternal breast tissue: 2 pounds
    • Maternal blood volume: 4 pounds
    • Fluids in maternal tissue: 4 pounds
    • Maternal fat stores: 7 pounds
Makes me feel a bit better ;)

  • @canavara I've lost muscle too and it makes me sad.  I was exercising a lot until I started feeling sick/tired and I have done nothing in weeks.  It's hard to know exactly what you're losing and gaining overall.

  • Ungh. 6w4d here and I've lost 10 lbs. Went from 129 to 119 (I'm 5'6"). No matter how hard I try to keep food down though, I just keep getting sick. Hoping this eases up in the coming weeks...
  • I have gained yet. I'm the same weight, but I have definitely lost muscle; my whole body looks different. MS isn't really keeping me down, but I just generally don't feel well. I'm having trouble even taking the dog for a brisk walk without getting winded and feeling lightheaded. I'm hoping to get back into a routine soon.
  • I'm 10 weeks 2 days and started at 135 have lost about 12 pounds from MS. I have not done ANY exercise since about 4 weeks from the nausea. I feel like I have lost all the muscle in my legs. They are normally so muscular and now they look puny! But I don't know if it's bloat or what but in the past few days my husband swears I have started showing. I think my tummy has stayed the same but everything else has shrunk!!
