Bad first ultrasound

I used to not have regular periods for years. After my daughter I nursed for a few months and started getting periods around 4 months ago. they're the most regular they've ever been, exactly 28 days apart. I took clomid to conceive my daughter, and even then ovulated on day 17, but I figured with 28 day cycles i ovulated on 14. i was sick so much last month that we really only tried on days 14,15 and 17. so i was pretty certain of my estimated date being Jan 18. i explain all that BC yesterday i would have been 6w6d and we had our ultrasound. I only measured 5w6d. there was a yolk sack and a fetal pole, but no hb yet. my dr said she thinks my due date is just off and said to come back next week and we should see a heart beat. has anybody had this happen? How'd it turn out for you? I'm feeling so bummed about it, if it's a mmc I don't want to wait another week to know

Re: Bad first ultrasound

  • Hi - I do think it's quite possible to still be early - if you aren't for sure when you ovulated it could have been a day or two after the 17th and it also could have implanted late - I'm sorry you have to do the week wait - I've been there and it sucks. FX for a good scan next week.

  • I've been told that scans can be off by up to 7 days. Yesterday my OB told me that typically they are concerned it the dates are off by 2 weeks. I have a friend who just gave birth to her healthy son after her scans being off by one week at the beginning. She was also very confident in her dates. Some babes just are slow growers at the start. I'll be praying for you.
  • My first ultrasound with my twins wasn't good, they thought blighted ovum. But now they're 4 years old and fiesty as ever!

It's so hard to wait, but that's really the only thing you can do. hang in there!

  • My LMP was off by 2.5 weeks when I went in for my first scan with DS1.  We were actively trying to conceive so I knew the exact date, I just had a really wonky cycle and ovulated very late.

I know the next week will be difficult, it is really tough being in a sort of "not knowing" limbo but try to stay positive in the meantime.
  • I had that exact thing happen to me my last pregnancy. Thought I was 6w5d and measured 5w5d. Turns out I just O'd later than usual. While my story has no bearing on yours, just know it's probable that everything is fine. I'm sorry you have to go through a tough waiting period to find out. You'll be in my thoughts.

  • Unless you were temping to confirm ovulation - then you don't really know when you ovulated. Hang in there. I know this will be a long week but unfortunately there is nothing you can do but wait. Big hugs.

  • This happened with my first. We had an early ultrasound with what I thought was my 6 weeks due to me spotting. No heartbeat and no fetal pole and my Dr said, nonchalantly well this pregnancy is 50/50. We'll have you back in 2 weeks to see if there's a heartbeat, if not this pregnancy is not viable. To say we were upset was an understatement. The longest two weeks of my life. We went in and we had a healthy heartbeat and they moved my due date back a week. I ended up having our son 3 weeks early. I hope this helps, I understand the stress!

  • We had a sort of similar situation, although I did know to the day when I had ovulated. An early ultrasound where the HR was low and the doctor wanted me to come back in a week. It was a long, long wait and it weighed on me but I decided that, until I saw signs of a miscarriage (bleeding, cramping), I wasn't going to borrow trouble and I would just assume the best. The recheck ultrasound was perfect, with a strong HR. Sometimes, it is just about timing and, unfortunately, there's no rushing time. If you're 5w5d, as long as the baby is growing well at the next ultrasound, then that's great but also don't be freaked out if the HR isn't where it's supposed to be because that's the time when the heart just begins to form (6-7 weeks). They couldn't tell me anything conclusively until I was 8 weeks along.

Hugs. Hope you get good news soon!

  • Like PP mentioned, it's very possible that you were in too early to detect a heartbeat.  I know this week is going to be long and stressful for you and I'm sorry you have to go through that.  Fingers crossed you see a strong little heartbeat next week though!

  • Like PP's, I read that the heart doesn't form until 6-8 weeks and it can be difficult to detect even at 6 weeks. Good luck, and I hope you find some ways to take self-care time this week.

  • Like a PP mentioned, I'm pretty sure measurements can be off in the beginning.  At my 6w3d appt I measured 5w6d, a week later I was measuring 6w4day... a week after that I was measuring 8w1d which was exactly on schedule with the EDD they gave me from my LMP.  Hugs to you and prayers for a stress free week!!
  • Thanks y'all! I'm glad to hear it can turn out just fine! Only 6 more days
  • Hi, did they draw blood for hcg (betas)? That's what my doc did for me to see if they were doubling. I had blood drawn 3 times so far.
  • We did early on (about three weeks ago) and they were doing fine
