Trouble TTC

temp'ing 101 help please

hey guys :D currently i don't temp at all. I tried previously and found that my temps would swing drastically depending on outside factors... (was it colder or warmer than normal in my apartment- did i sleep with more or less clothes on- did i use heavier or lighter blankets) .... i'm sure this sounds like a silly question- but those here that temp, do you control all these outside factors to keep the numbers as consistent as possible? i'd like to start temping again but i want to make sure i am doing it right

Re: temp'ing 101 help please

  • @harleyquinn0621 I have been doing my basal temp for a couple of months now.  Within the two months I haven't had much change with outside factors as I never wear pajamas (may be a bit to much info about me, sorry  ) and haven't had my heavy blanket on for any of it.  I did notice it went down a little bit when we started keeping our windows open at night but not by too much.

  • @harlyquinn0621 , I've had similar problems. I find that mine are usually give or take 0.3 degrees on a given day. It's only month two of temping for me. I'll be interested to see what others with more experience say, too!

  • I have only had one month of ovulation so I can't say I have noticed any particular pattern but remember you are looking at the forest and not the trees.  Even if you have some odd temperature fluctuation you are trying to see an overall pattern that happens over a cycle.  It may take you a few cycles to figure it out.  I have a poor sleep cycle and thought it would impact my temps.  Sometimes I temp at midnight, somtimes at 5am.  With my once successful month of ovulation I still noticed a clear shift after O.

  • Are you using fertility friend?  This was the only way I was able to see a temp shift - it's sometimes not super obvious if you just chart it yourself on paper

  • Have you spoken to your RE about temping?  Clomid can really throw your temps off.    Some people can see a pattern while on it and others just get wild fluctuations that don't make sense.

  • @GoldenKeys you know- i didnt even think about talking to him about it.. i know when i tried the first time it was before clomid- but now if it might throw it off perhaps i should speak with him about it... thanks for the info!!

  • So, here's my chart. Actually my LP is long so any advice would be helpful. Not sure what's going on, all bfn. You need to 1) be sure you're using a good bbt thermometer. I bought my first from Walgreens but wound up tossing it for a Walmart cheepie that was reviewed online as more accurate. 2) take your temp within an hour of the same time every day (i.e. Morning 9am). Log all changes, for example excessive drinking makes my temp higher(fake OV spike). My RE/OBGYN told me to keep temping thru Clomid but since my cycle hasn't started I'm waiting my first time trying it. Clomid blocks the receptors that measure estrogen so you over produce it. I am not sure why it would make your temp spike?
