Lactation support

I've been making lactation smoothies every day since LO was born to ensure good supply. Now that he's 9 weeks I'm thinking perhaps its okay to cut back, but I'm so nervous to mess up the flow of things. The only reason why I'm considering is because I'm gaining weight instead of losing :( I've looked into some of the teas, but I really don't care for them as much. Do any of you eat/drink something daily to increase your supply? Is it necessary?

I eat oatmeal for breakfast most mornings, but haven't done anything else to boost supply.

  • Beer. Even if it doesn't contain alcohol. My supply started shortening when I had to pump a few times. One beer every few days helped. I would drink a small light beer right after he ate. It worked wonders. I'm not a big drinker in the first place,  so once I got my supply up I stopped drinking the beer. I have no supply issues at all now.
  • I've eaten muesli everyday for breakfast since LO was born. Since it contains oats, I'm thinking it might keep my supply in check. I EBF so I don't know how much I actually produce. People have told me that after the first month your supply should stabilize with no need for any purported lactation boosters.

I EBF as well so I have NO clue. I'm just worried if I stop drinking the smoothies it'll impact my supply, but I'm probably just being paranoid! I have oatmeal for breakfast too.

If it's worth noting, I make the occasional batch of lactation cookies and dabble in lactation teas. IMHO, if they help, it would be very slight compared to when I don't have any boosters. I haven't noticed a significant difference. Perhaps try to cut your smoothie portion in half and see how that goes?

  • @redselig I think I'll try weaning off of them and see how LO does. Its just so darn hard to tell if you're producing enough on your own!

  • I second the lactation cookies and oatmeal.  My supply took a hit when I went back to work after DD1 was born.  You might want to look at your calories beyond the smoothies or exactly how many are in the smoothie in general.
What is your water intake?  My supply does better when I drink lots of water.
