symphysis pubic dysfunction

Anyone have it? Holy shit my groin/pubic area is SO SORE. Walking and sleeping (rolling over) hurt so much. I googled groin/pubic pain during pregnancy and apparently it's called symphysis pubic dysfunction. I had it in the second trimester for several weeks and then it went away, now it's back and worse than ever before.

Re: symphysis pubic dysfunction

  • With my second, I had around the clock severe pain.  It was awful, you have my sympathy.
This time around I have fairly mild discomfort.  Honestly, I think it's just a different pregnancy, smaller  baby.

I do notice it gets worse if I walk quickly (meaning - more quickly than a shuffle, which is so frustrating for this normally speed-walking New Yorker) or if I don't keep two (yup, we're up to two) pillows between my knees at night.  Basically, I try to keep my pelvis as stable as possible to avoid torquing the symphsis pubis joint.

That's all I've got.  Hang in there.

  • Yep. Had it since around 30 weeks. Some days are worse that others but night is ROUGH. I have a mini Snoogle (the regular one was too much pillow and too painful for me to untangle myself from when I had to pee)
that I sleep with between my legs, and do my best to get up slowly. I find that if I walk a lot that day I really really regret it that night.
So my only advice is to take things sooooo sloooowww and go easy on yourself. I've taught myself that my normal speed was me pushing myself too hard. I am literally a turtle walking home from the train, it's added a solid 15 minutes to my commute!

  • Yup, right there with you!! I often feel like my vagina (groin, pelvis, whatever...) is ripping in half. Especially if I'm on the floor with my older daughter and have to get up... Crazy painful. And walking. And rolling over. Gawd I can't wait for all these fun symptoms to be over!!

Oh gosh it's the worst!!! Luckily I had it over a weekend and was able to not move for 3 days and eventually it mostly went away. I also got one of those old people cushions for driving. Call your nurse and see if they recommend meds or anything. Good luck!

  • I was officially diagnosed with this at my 34 week appointment, even though I've had the pain for weeks. It's awful. I can't lift my legs high enough to put on pants or shoes without assistance, can barely get out of bed in the morning and have to support myself along the wall for the first few minutes. I can't wait to deliver and feel better. My OB said that, for some women, it gets so bad that they wind up bedridden or using a walker. I have 4 weeks left, so I am praying that it doesn't get much worse than it is right now.

  • I've had it since week 20! I was in so much pain that my Dr sent me to see a physical therapist. She got me a SI (sacroiliac) belt and it has been amazing! Its harder to wear now that the baby has dropped, it puts too much pressure on my lower abdomen and gets uncomfortable after a while. But if I'm going to be on my feet standing or walking for a while I definitely put it on. I would definitely recommend trying it.
  • Yup, it's been rough. Pillow between the knees while sleeping helps. My midwife also emphasized I should try to keep my legs together while rolling or getting out of bed. Lecithin supplements were surprisingly helpful, and a support belt if I'm going to be on my feet for a while helps too. Hang in there! We're almost done!

I had it bad with my first pregnancy to the point that I ended up opting for a csection. The last 8 weeks i couldnt lift my legs to get into bed without hubby assisting and he had to help me get dressed.

This pregnancy i noticed the symptoms of it start around 20 weeks, but i noticed after my hubby and i have sex my pelvis joints/hips dont slip, i walk much better and the pain is gone. i dont have to shuffle. I talked to the dr about it and he said that the sex is stretching out those pelvic muscles. If my husband and i go more then three days without sex then my pelvis gets stiff and the symptoms come back with a vengence and i have to shuffle to walk and its extremely painful (plus im grumpy! Lmao) so i tease my husband that he is my daily PT (physical therapy) he doesnt complain lol.

Additionally I have a support belt but i dont wear it, since this time my issue is more inner pelvis related, but i plan to use it in the weeks after baby since sex is a no go for awhile, and i do always sleep with a pillow between knees. I am 34 weeks now only 5 weeks to go :)

(Edited cause i cant type at 5am lol)
  • Thanks everyone--glad I'm not the only one! I slept with a pillow between my legs last night and this morning it felt quite a bit better. I feel like I can actually move today.
  • Shoot, I think I need a walker for real...
