Trouble TTC

Hi, new here. (Loss mentioned)

Hello, everyone! I'm Amanda, 29, and my husband, 31, and I have been TTC for 38 months, 39 cycles.

I was pretty active on the TTC board back in 2013, but when we hit our year mark I just ghosted. It was too hard to keep reading all the "I had a twinge, I think I might be pregnant!" posts, but I wasn't emotionally ready to move over here yet. A little about us-

Our insurance covers zero REs, and the OBGYN they sent us to gave me a prescription for clomid within 15 minutes, and wouldn't refer DH to another doctor to get an SA because, and I quote, "he's such a strapping young man, he's certainly not the problem. " Thanks, Doc.(It's a certifiable miracle I managed to be even remotely polite to that man. I'm expecting a call from the Vatican any day now.) Long story short, our insurance is not set up to be helpful with infertility (or apparently, in some cases,  even admit that it's a real medical problem), so we've spent the last 17 months saving up to go to an RE out-of-pocket...and now our insurance will be changing to a PPO in July, and it will finally cover several of them, no referral needed. Isn't that timing just fantastic? (<<That statement is equal parts sarcasm and genuine excitement. )

Anyway. I decided it was finally time to join here. I haven't been temping/charting at all for a year, because it just got draining, but I started again this morning when AF showed up. We'll have to wait until July to make an appointment with an RE, but hopefully by the fall we will finally be getting the answers we need. I have one loss, during my early second trimester, but it was from an accidental pregnancy seven years ago. It has been a long journey already, but I'm glad to finally have some place to talk about it with people who understand what it's like.

Thanks for reading my rather long intro! I look forward to getting to know you all better.

  • Hello! You have quite the long story! I am so sorry you have had so many troubles. My partner got a semen analysis through his PCP but he had to ask for it explaining that we were heading to a fertility doc. I'm so happy you have better insurance now. My insurance does not cover fertility treatment which really sucks.  I love this board and it is a lot less intimidating than the regular ttgp board.

  • Hello! I'm so sorry your OBGYN was less than helpful.... Insurance has been a pain point for me...mine covers diagnostics and 6 IUIs (lifetime max) however now that I'm ready to move on to an IUI they are being a pain......I may just cover my first one out of pocket. I'm glad you're getting some coverage now....it's so frustrating bc infertility is a medical condition -insurance should cover it

this is the only board I come to and I really love coming here...even if it's just to read :)

  • Welcome. I am sorry the OBGYN was so insensitive and I applaud your restraint. I'm not sure I would have been able to.

My insurance also does not cover any fertility testing or treatment at all...and we can't switch until November.  I shudder to think of the costs we are headed towards after our first visit with the new obgyn I am seeing at the end of the month.

My insurance does not cover infertility treatment either.  Thus far my treatment has been under the medical diagnosis of "amenorrhea".  This covers u/s as diagnostic, lots of blood work and HSG as a diagnostic because not having my period is a medical issue.  Once I get an IF diagnosis all bets are off.  I don't remember the details of your situation but advocate for yourself with your doc and make sure he/she is not putting infertility as the primary diagnosis, at least for now.
