I have a zippity zip on the way... If that doesn't work I'll have to check out the woombies. They looks super easy!

  • Also struggling with a routine as LO won't sleep more than an hour stretch at a time unless she's on my chest... She is such a light sleeper so when I get out of the recliner to put her in the RnP, she instantly wakes up and cries... I've had a few nights of just sleeping in the recliner because my shushing and cuddling doesn't calm her. She's also in random spurts of eating ever 30-60 min. And that's after me feeding from both sides for 10-15 min (I know she's getting plenty because I'm able to still hand express once she is off). I just feel her hands are always in her mouth and she's just a hungry girl! But momma would like some sleep...
@Kennedy0830 This might not help, but have you tried feeding on one side for longer to make sure she's getting enough of the fatty/filling milk that comes in behind the watery milk?  So for example instead of switching her after 10 or 15 mins, feed her for 25-30 mins on one side, then offer the other side after that to top her off if she's interested?  It could be that she really just is hungry (or cluster feeding if it only happens at certain times of day), but it might be worth trying if you haven't already, just to see if she gives you a slightly longer stretch.
I have.. Usually at night we'll go for 20-30 min on one side and she could eat for an hour. I just honestly think she doesn't like being put down sometimes. I dread the evenings due to this. Other than that she eats like normal and sleeps until the next feeding. It's gotta be cluster feeding but I literally am fearful to move so I don't wake her up and have to start all over during this time!
I'm dealing with this too! Holly will nurse for really long stretches especially at night and can only fall asleep on me. If I mess up the transfer from my chest to the RNP I have to start over from the beginning, which means nursing for at least 45 mins. My girl is addicted to boob.

  • Woombie for the win. They are the only ones my kids have not been able to escape.

The big question is when to do the diaper change.

So on the advice of a nursery nurse from the hospital, I have been trying to change his diaper before feedings to wake him up. But last night, I changed a diaper before and then again immediately after two separate feedings (he pooped while eating), so this meant four diaper changes at 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. instead of two diaper changes.

This is my issue too. I think what might be working is feeding almost to the end, waiting as long as possible for a poop, then when he comes off to burp, changing him, then consoling him with the end of the feeding.

This is exactly us!! And then I tried changing up the routine (changing diaper after) and he did not want to calm down after the change. I'm sort of thinking of feeding a bit, change and then feed for two more minutes to end things. I express milk and feed with bottle. But eating calms him down and makes him sleepy.
  • @yogahh The zippadee zip was great for weaning an older (3-4 month) baby off the swaddle when they start to roll over, but may not be restrictive enough to give a newborn the sense of security you're looking for from a swaddle. So if it doesn't work out now, save it for a few months from now! My son slept in those from about 4-10 months  As for the Velcro swaddles, I have found that if you do them very tight they usually work for the first 2 months or so, and then I switched to the miracle blanket. He was too long for it, so we swaddled him legs out for a month or two. The woombie might work if the legs are what you're having trouble with, but they didn't work for my son because he always slipped his fingers through the neckline and drove himself crazy trying to suck them.

My girl poops while eating also. I feed a little bit then change after the inevitable poop. If it doesn't happen 15 or so minutes into the feed then I change anyways. Then I feed her a bit more till she falls asleep a bit. I then swaddle and feed till sleep and pop her in bed. This whole routine usually takes 30 minutes.

Good to know about the zippity zip. I thought they were good for newborns? If not, glad to know we can still use it later on! As for the Velcro this girl gets her hands up to her chest within minutes of putting it on and legs out. Dh keeps joking she is going to be on the field hockey team, she's so strong!

@kbrands7 I wish I could do that!  Lucy sleeps so little that it wouldn't be too bad and would actually be a blessing to not have to wake her but she seems very sensitive to having even a slightly wet nappy. After about 10 minutes she gets squirmy and fussy till it is changed. I guess I can understand that sitting in a wet diaper might not feel too fantastic.

This may seem mean, but since DS2 wakes every 2-3hrs like clockwork at night, if he has fallen asleep directly after eating and pooped, I usually let him be until I change him at his next wakeup. He hasn't been prone to diaper rash, so unless I can feel a large warm spot through the diaper, I leave him alone if he's asleep and comfortable. If I do change him while sleeping, I can usually keep him asleep by keeping his torso warm and moving slowly to let him settle back down after each Moro reflex.
I may try this too because waking him for a change if its not totally necessary is such an ordeal. And @kbrands7 you are a super-mom and if you say it's ok I'm okay with it!
  • Thanks, @babyfmama!

@kurrant I sympathize. My first was that way which is where the change-without-waking practice came in. It almost became like a game...except if I lost then I was in for another 40min of comfort nursing and I'd miss my opportunity to sleep before the next actual feeding. It does get better and easier!

I feed half the bottle, change her and give her the other half. If she happens to poop i will try to leave some milk in the bottle so I can give her a quick top up before I put her back down after her diaper change. This seems to be working really well!
  • Routine!!! You mean there's life past the initial cluster feeding!!! Lol. My little one is up practically constantly! My only solution was to find a position where I can sit and feed him and of (when) I drift off I've got him in a safe spot/position!
  • How in the world do y'all nurse with just a night light? I tried tonight but my LO is a bob and weaver and I couldn't see to help him get s latch
  • I can't either with just a night light. I have a light dimmer I pretty much always keep on (low but stronger than a night light) otherwise I can't see LO at all.
  • I've been using the sound machine that has a projector on it. It gives off just enough light to see what I'm doing, however I do break out my phone every once in awhile to give a quick bright light when needed.
  • I just recently got a salt lamp that has a dimmer and suspect it will be wonderful for dim light while feeding/changing at night!
