Flying and TSA wait times

so we are supposed to be flying to CO the beginning of June. DD will be 5 months at that time. We are flying United. ANd DH has precheck I am wondering if I will get it as well on my ticket. I have heard wait time are close to 3 hours for security in some place and cannot imagine waiting in line with an EBF baby for security.

Any advice? Or anyone else flying with infants lately?

Re: Flying and TSA wait times

  • DIAs security is amazing. I have had great experiences every time I've flown. A lot of it depends on the time of your flight though. What town are you going to? :) Not in a creepy way, I'm from CO. Haha

  • We are flying from Chicago to Denver
  • We flew to CO for a baby shower last November. My husband had pre check and I ended up with it as well bc of him. Security went very smoothly. Hope the same goes for you too. I'm traveling to Mexoco in July and DH may not be able to go. Not super excited about flying with DS alone, but if it has to be done we will do it. Good luck!

I'm hoping that precheck will carry on to my ticket as well!! Fingers crossed
  • From what I see on the news, Chicago is where you need to worry @xmasbaby15 so pre check may be a good idea. DIA security is usually pretty smooth, but give yourself lots of time!
  • Chicago may be quite a wait, so like pps have said, pre-check would be good.
Houston, TX to Orange County, CA and vice versa were a breeze for us.  Colette was 5 months at the time, and traveling with her and DS (4 years old) went smoothly.

I hope everything works out well for y'all!

  • o hare has always been really fast for me for security. Denver has been my primary airport since day one and I have never had any issues. To make security easiest though get a baby carrier you can nurse in. I love my Tula.
  • I've never flown with baby yet but will be flying from Chicago to Seattle this summer.  I've been looking online for advice extensively on this.  I'm going to be wearing baby with my infantino when I go through security (I may or may not bring the carseat and stroller through security as well and check them at the gate if It costs a lot of money to check them with baggage).  I will be flying on my own so I really haven't decided what I'm exactly doing yet if it's going to be the easiest thing for me to do.

I've flown quite a lot with my now 6 month old. I wear her in a SSC and haven't run into any terribly long waits (even at O'hare). For car seats and strollers, they are free to check whether you do it at the check-in counter or at the gate. One thing to note is that when you wear your baby through security, they will test your hands for explosive residue. I just mention it because false positives are really common for moms of babies because the diaper rash ointment Desitin contains glycerin. Glycerin absorbs into your skin really easily while you're applying it, and is difficult to remove with vigorous washing. We've had a couple false positives because of this (out of maybe 8 screenings). The TSA that had to do a more thorough search on us were really nice about it, they see a lot of moms and babies on a daily basis. They warned that it will likely happen several more times before we're done with diapers, given the frequency that we fly at.
