On Monday, April 25th I had my regular OB appointment with an ultrasound. I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid) and still just 1 cm dialted/barely effaced. Doctor decided to go ahead and schedule an induction for 39weeks. She explained that due to all of the fluid baby was unable to move down into my pelvis and he was camped out in my ribs. Despite having regular contractions, I wasn't dilating and effacing because baby was too high. I was really hoping the psat week of contractions was actually doing something. Doctor scheduled another ultrasound and NST for Friday, April 29th and induction for Sunday, May 1st.
On Friday ultrasound confirmed that I still had excessive fluid and no change with dilation/effacement, even though I was still having some good contractions. I also learned that my doctor would not be doing my induction/delivery because she was going out on maternity leave. I was a little bit sad about this because she rocks! but it was something she had warned me about a few months prior. May EDD was May 6th and hers was the 10th.
Sunday, May 1st I woke up at 4:30am with a fairly strong contraction. I was already sleeping on the couch because it was the only place I felt comfortable, so I turned on the tv and tried to relax as much as possible. About 10 minutes later another contraction came, then another. I decided I should probably start tracking and see where they were at. Around 5:30 am I was getting pretty tired and decided to take some tylenol, chug a bunch of water, and get in a hot shower to see if that would calm them down. I kept thinking that I needed to get rest because I was being induced that evening and assumed it would be a long process. After my shower the contractions were still there, ranging from 8-11 minutes. DD woke up around 7:30am and joined me on the couch and we talked about what was going on and just snuggled up while watching cartoons. I decided to let DH sleep in because I would be needing him much more later on. At 11am MIL arrived with my step-daughter, contractions were still there and picking up intensity. MIL woke up DH and we continued to lounge around while everyone took turns hold my hand through them. At 2:30pm I decided to shower again and shave my legs lol. I attempted to take a nap in DD's room, but just as soon as I fell asleep another strong contraction would come and I would have to get up and try to walk through it.
I had instructions to call at 6pm to make sure L&D had room for me to start the induction. That was the only thing on my mind. For some reason I kept thinking that these contractions weren't doing anything, so I just kept telling myself 6pm, it will be here soon enough! At 5pm we ate a family dinner with MIL too since she would be staying here with the kids. After that I went through my hospital bag to make sure it was all set. I made sure the kids had their outfits for while we would be gone and went over everything with MIL.
At 6pm I called L&D. At this point I was pretty worn out and really wanted to get the epidural and take a nap! The nurse on the phone said I didn't need to come in until 8:30pm for the induction and I almost lost it on the phone. She was pretty vague and I said I was having contractions at 7 minutes apart and breathing through them. I hung up the phone and cried. At 6:45pm I decided I had enough and called my doctor. She basically said that I needed to get to the hospital NOW being that this was my 3rd child and experiencing strong contractions. DH and I packed the car and said our goodbyes to the family. The hospital is 5 minutes away and during the drive I had 2 contractions. We parked the car and I had 2 more contractions walking into the hospital, then another right as I hit L&D reception at 7:20pm. They immediately got me into a room and skipped triage. The 2 nurses were scrambling around trying to get my paperwork done and get me into a gown and IV started right away. I said I wanted the eidural ASAP, so they drew blood for that. I got hooked up to the monitors and the nurse checked me. She said I was 7cm, with baby's head right there and my water bulging. My first words were, "So I probably can't get that epidural then?" Nurse said they would have to wait on my bloodwork. I immediately had DH call my mom to get her butt here NOW. We were all kind of in shock that I was already so far along.
Doctor showed up about a half hour later and checked me, 8cm, and she broke my water. Thank goodness I was at the hospital because it was like a waterfall! It just kept gushing all over. Things got a little bit hairy after that. I really wasn't ready to give up on the epidural even though I was clearly in transition. Nurse gave me some meds in my IV to try and help, but it did nothing. Contractions were right on top of each other. Doctor came back 10 minutes after breaking my water and checked me again, 9cm. She told the nurses to get things ready, then she looked at me and said I would be having a baby within 5 minutes.
I started to freak out a little bit, I guess I didn't have enough time to process everything. Doctor told me with my next contraction to grab my knees and push. I was resisting a little bit, Dr. told me to lock eyes with her and listen up! She was stern, but it brought me back and I agreed. A nurse jumped onto my knee to hold my legs back. Two pushes and his head was out, but his shoulders were stuck. I took a breath and with one final push Grayson Cole was born at 8:26pm, just a little over an hour after we arrive at L&D. He weighed 8lbs8oz and was 20in long.
In hindsight I am so glad that I didn't have time for the epidural, I was able to get right up and go to the bathroom by myself. With my first I swore up and down I would have an all natural birth with no meds and ended up getting the epi and it was heaven! I was so wrapped up in getting rest and just couldn't believe that I was actually in labor on my own. Grayson is now over 2 weeks old and he is the sweetest, sleepy baby ever! Easy peasy compared to his big brother! We are all so in love.
