If you think it's "irresponsible kids" who hold minimum wage jobs, you're sadly mistaken.  People who work minimum wage have college degrees.  They're parents.  They're trying to support families.

And the problem isn't that a company needs to raise prices to compensate for wages of their lowest-rate workers; they're paying CEOs.

And guess what?  If Discovery only paid its CEO 1000x what its lowest-paid makes, they would still find a perfectly competent CEO!  And if the choice comes down to paying a CEO a little less and raising prices a little less, or raising prices more and seeing sales decline, a sane publicly traded company will protect revenue.

Having a sane minimum wage that allows people to live above the poverty line is just good economic sense.  Don't believe me?  https://journalistsresource.org/studies/economics/inequality/the-effects-of-raising-the-minimum-wage

FemShep is right, it's not just "irresponsible kids." I've had 3 minimum wage jobs in the last 5 years. I will be 28 this month. I have a teenage stepson and a husband who depended on that income. I was a college dropout at the time (I just graduated community college) but several of my coworkers were people with degrees who were also depending on that minimum wage paycheck. They didn't deserve to be scrapping by because there were no jobs, and I shouldn't have had to either just because I made a mistake when I was 21.

And let's say for argument's sake that it is irresponsible kids working those jobs.... why do you assume they'll be out on the street? Maybe having a job that demands more of them because of increased pay will instill a better work ethic in them. Because many teenagers I worked with, and my stepson who was raised by his mother, are lazy and entitled. I think every generation has their share of those types, but most people my age did not act like that at work when they were teenagers. Maybe it would actually have a positive impact on these "irresponsible kids."

@CopperBoom86 I think that's why most cities and states that are raising the minimum wage have different rules for big companies and small companies.  The wage increase is much more gradual for smaller companies so they have more time to adjust.

*lurking, and I have to post sorry because this is a pet peeve of mine*

The US is not the richest country in the world. It is the 9th. Quatar is the richest and almost three times more so than the US.

Here are the standings for 2015 according to gross domestic product (GDP) based on purchasing-power-parity (PPP) per capita:

EXACTLY what I was going to say.
On a similar note, I guess you could say my UO is that I do NOT think America is the greatest country in the world.
But I'm glad to see so many people trying to change that!! ☺
