Las Vegas and Pregnant - Advice needed!!

So I will be traveling to a Marketing Conference from Boston to Las Vegas  at the end of June (I'll be 31 weeks). As a FTM I am a little intimated by the travel and being so far fro my family even though it is still early. I was told my husband can come as long as he pays for his own flight. So now I am pretty excited to get this little trip in with H at minimal cost.

I am booking flights now and am struggling because I am not sure what I should do. We are going to fly out Tuesday night and get in at 11pm Las Vegas time for the conference Wed, Thurs and Friday. Each day I am done at 5, so then H and I have the rest of the time together. My hotel is booked through Saturday by my company, but the only direct flights out Saturday are the red eye at like midnight. There is the same red eye Friday night as well.

As appealing as having all day Saturday together to do what we want... I am worried about having to be out of the hotel and not having a place to rest from noon to midnight...

So should we take the red eye Friday or Saturday? How much is there to do in Vegas for a pregnant lady? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: Las Vegas and Pregnant - Advice needed!!

  • I went to Vegas at 31 weeks during my last pregnancy and had a blast! We enjoyed walking the strip/people watching and took lots of breaks. You could spend the morning at the pool until check out and explore the strip afterwards. Also lots of fun shopping to do!

Is the direct just way longer than one with one stop? I would totally take one stop (especially with no plane change) over a red eye but that's just me.

  • I would stay the extra day but my husband and I always choose late flights out of Vegas. We usually stay in the room until check out then head to the pool for a few hours. If you are staying on the strip there is plenty of shopping and walking to be done, if you're not big gamblers.  There are also some good restaurants and even a few good smaller shows.
  • I would probably leave on Saturday if you want some quality time with your hubs.  You can have the hotel store your luggage after checkout and chill by the pool if you want to relax.  There are a lot of places in the hotels to sit and relax - shopping areas and people watching plus restaurants.   It will be pretty warm at that time of the year so be sure to bring warm breezy clothes and comfy shoes.

I would also stay through Saturday.  Stay in the hotel for as long as you can and then like others said if you want to go to the pool do that, although you won't have a place to shower if that's what you want to do.  They will most likely hold your luggage at the hotel until you go to the airport.  I went to Vegas at the beginning of June last year and in Mid-July a few years prior and in June it was 90+ degrees and in July it was 115.  Even though its a dry heat, I couldn't imagine walking around in that for a long amount of time while being 31 weeks pregnant.  If you like to gamble, see shows, eat, shop, etc there are plenty of other fun things to do in the A.C.!

  • I've never been to Vegas, but I would definitely stay until Saturday night. I'm sure the hotel will store your luggage, and you can use the pool, go have lunch and dinner, etc. It's nice to have the extra time with your DH!

  • Stay the extra day!!! You won't regret it. Even having that time to just squeeze in a couple of more hours by the pool or the all you can eat buffet...totally worth it. :)
  • I had to go to Vegas for a week in February, and I had been to Vegas several times before - I think it was my 4th or 5th trip, both for work and pleasure.  I flippin' LOVE Vegas....but pregnant, uuugh, nope, never again lol.  I'm kinda a party girl and I like to drink and have fun (I don't get why people bring kids there, it seems pointless to me), so not being able to drink and feeling dumb dancing in the club even though I wasn't showing much yet just felt so lame to me.  I also didn't hang in the casino and gamble with my coworkers because the smoke was too overwhelming - if I wasn't pregnant I would have stayed sucked it up, but I felt like I was giving the baby cancer just by walking through the casino to the conference center each day.  There are a good amount of other sight seeing things to do there that you can take in during the day on Saturday when you're off, but it really depends on your personality and what you like to do.  Tons of good restaurants and lots of places you'd be able to sit down and relax for a bit.  You might even consider getting tickets to a show on one or two of the nights - I hear that the Britney show is actually outstanding, I wanted to see it in Feb when I was there but ran out of time to get good tix.  I'm sure you could also use the hotel pool - just be wary that a lot of pools have pool parties even during the day everyday, so there will still be obnoxious people around drinking lol.   I, personally, would get the heck outta there and take the Friday red eye lol, go back again another time sans baby and have fun!  But that's me....

  • Ughh @SkiChic626 @justaudrey we had tix to her show last year this time around as my bachelorette trip but she hurt her ankle and cancelled the show!!! We ended up watching some cirque du soleil but I fell asleep...
  • @AliKay20 NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Maybe when our August babies are a little older, we'll have to have an TB August 2016 trip to Vegas so we can all go see Britney LOL

  • Your can also request a late check out. Usually that is sometime between 1pm and 3pm. It varies by hotel. (I even saw 4pm once, if they didn't need the room the next day, so it was "subject to availability") And most hotels have showers in the locker rooms, so you can freshen up before the plane if you've been at the pool all day.

Also most hotels that I've been at have two pools, one for families and one for adults only.  When I stayed at Planet Hollywood last summer, we spent one day at the adults only pool drinking and having fun and then relaxed at the "family" pool the next day. I also agree, I have no idea why people bring children to Vegas. Every time I am there I think that!

  • I've been to Vegas twice for conferences, as PP said, take very comfortable shoes!!  It's so much walking even if you are staying in the same building, those hotels are insanely huge.  As @SkiChic626 mentioned,  the smoke in the casinos is usually overwhelming to the nonsmoker. The shows can be nice and there are tons of places to eat. You may want to check with the hotel to see if you can get or pay a (hopefully small) fee for a late 6pm check out. That way if you are at the pool and want to shower and relax (nap) in the afternoon before dinner and your flight, you have that option. You could head to dinner then straight to the airport in the evening. Also remember what your next few days will be like when you get back at some horrible morning hour EST.

    @alikay20 that's such a bummer!

I went for my birthday and it was the same day she broke up with her ex-boyfriend. She addressed the cheating rumors on stage and we were all like...

  • As tempting as it may seem to stay Saturday, that is a whole 12 or so hours to kill after checkout. Vegas is probably going to be awfully hot then, you will be mega pregnant and probably not want to walk around a bunch/have heat stroke. Unless you are willing to get a chap hotel off the strip to kill some time in before your flight, I would say leave Friday.

I just got back from Vegas for a work trip but that was at 25 weeks pregnant, so my advice may not be super helpful. I would call ahead and let them know you were pregnant. Typically I never do this kind of thing because I don't like using my pregnancy for special treatment but our admin had notified the hotel when she booked so I went with it. When I arrived, they made a huge deal out of making sure my room was absolutely smoke free, super clean and that I got early check in. They also gave me late check out without blinking an eye.

If you could get late checkout pushed back to really late in the day, I think it would be fun to stay the extra time. Depending on where you are staying, you may not have to get outside too much (it will be so hot in Vegas). If the hotel was ok with late checkout, I would plan on doing pool time, then getting cleaned up in your room and maybe walking around some of the connected hotels (Palazzo and Venetian are really pretty and you can go in between without going outside). Then the Wynn is just right next door and it always has beautiful things to look at. Maybe make a reservation at one of the restaurants there for supper and just head to the airport after that.

  • Prenatal massage at one of the spas??

Also, I actually sorta disagree about the heat.  Most of the times I've been to Vegas it's been over the summer and I LOVE it!  Yes, it's like 100-110 degrees everyday but it's God awfully dry, nothing like the humidity in the NE in the summer.  While I wasn't pregnant there any of the times over the summer, I found the dry heat to be extremely bearable, and I don't do well with heat even not pregnant.  The humidity makes it worse, but there's literally 0 there.  I just walked around Disney for a week and it was in the 90s and somewhat humid and I was actually OK.

You also might want to just check with your OB to make sure they're OK with you flying, that far nonetheless, at 31 weeks. I personally think it's totally fine, but my current OB won't let her patients fly after 28 weeks, and her partner won't let them fly after 24 weeks.  He once had a 24 week patient go into labor on the plane.  She had no other complications, it was purely pressure-related.  So after that he strongly advises against it.  Whatevs lol.  My midwives probably wouldn't have blinked an eye as long as my pregnancy was still healthy.  But just make sure....

  • Just got back from Vegas on Saturday and I'm 29 weeks. Do you have the option to take off work on Monday? If it were me, I would stay the extra day! That gives you Saturday to sleep in, or at least lounge around your room in the morning, rather than travelling on Friday night when you'll probably be exhausted from work. Depending on what you like to do, there are lots of places to get off your feet after you check out of your room - restaurants, bars, patios, etc. My husband and I would even go sit in the sports betting area in the casinos where they have big comfy chairs.

I did a prenatal massage at Caesars Palace and it was expensive but amazing! You can buy a day pass for the spa for a cheaper price, and enjoy all the amenities for the whole day. However it seemed like the spa was separated by gender so it might not be a good activity for you and your husband. I also really enjoyed time by the pool, drinking mocktails, and all of the different ice cream shops on the strip. It was 95 degrees one of the days, but it really didn't feel that warm to me. Whatever you decide to do, I'd recommend bringing lots of comfy shoes. I did so much walking (10-15 miles every day), and my feet started to hurt no matter what shoes I wore. It was nice to change into different shoes throughout the day because they all hurt in different ways, and switching between pairs helped to "even things out", if that makes sense.
  • Thanks for all the advice! Since I posted this question, my options have become limited as I have a new boss now! Looks like we are flying in early Tuesday AM (conference doesn't start until Wednesday so that gives us all day Tuesday) and taking the Friday red eye home.

Now we'll also be with the rest of my coworkers while waiting for our flight so I am sure we will find things to do!
