1st Trimester

What are the first screenings and WHEN do you get them?

Could anyone explain what the main blood tests/screenings are in the first trimester?
Is each clinic different, or is there a "standard screening" list - for moms over 37?

I know about the Down Syndrome blood testing and amnio (around 12 weeks I think), but what are the other tests that older women get?

Re: What are the first screenings and WHEN do you get them?

  • I would ask you dr. They will (or should) have a list of recommended screenings, and they should tell you any other tests they want you to have. Also, some tests/screenings are recommended by your state (but not covered by insurance which is weird in my opinion), but your dr office should be able to tell you.

  • I second what the pp said as it really varies based on your provider and if you are high risk or not. I was given a list of options in my book my office gave me at my first visit.

Could you name a few specifically that you both had? For example: Cystic fibrosis, chromosome deletion, etc?
Did you do all at around 12 weeks?

I don't know the names of the tests, but you can google them. And some are around 10 weeks, the NT is NOT a blood test alone, it is an ultrasound that measures neck folds for Downs. You'll have to look it up. And ask your dr for which tests he/she wants you to do or suggests you do.

ETA: I did whatever tests that the state of California suggested. Nuchal Translucency, CF, and another that I can't think of.

  • I did the NT scan and the cf blood draw as well.

  • I'm 10+ years younger than you but my doctor still recommended the CF genetic carrier test at 10 weeks (along with a few others due to heritage) and the NT scan with blood work (called the ultrascreen) for trisomies at 12 weeks.  If you're over 35, you may qualify for a panorama or maternity21 type test which is much more reliable in terms of trisomies and major chromosomal issues and can be done anytime after 10 weeks.

In the end, talk to your doctor about recommendations.  They are the ones who know you and your medical history, not us.
