Nickname for William

If we have a boy, his first name will be William. DH's name is William and his father's name is William. They have different middle names, though. Our last name is one syllable, starts with M and ends with N. I'm not a huge fan of calling him William, so my nickname options are Will, Liam and Tripp. 

Will feels like an abrupt name for a one syllable last name. 

i love Liam but it's very popular, which isn't a huge issue. Sister's name is Lucy, so is it too matchy?

Tripp is a nickname traditionally given to the third son of the same name, which this LO would be. I like Tripp a lot, but it's also one syllable. 

What at would you do?

Since it's a nn I don't think the one syllable matters and how many people are going to call him by his nn and last name?

What do your FIL and husband go by? If none of the options in your poll, I prefer Liam, popularity and all. I think I'm put off by Tripp bc it reminds me of the Palins.

I also thought of the Palins but still chose Tripp in this case. I wouldn't like it as a name but as a nickname it works and your son won't be one of 100 little Liams in his class.

Thanks for the input - I didn't know there's a Tripp Palin, so that wasn't a consideration for me. FIL goes by his middle name, DH goes by a different nn so all of the options are unique to this LO.

What about Trey as a nn option?

I prefer Liam, especially if the monosyllabic-ness is going to bother you.

I voted Will. I guess I'm in the minority but I'm the type who can't fathom naming their kid something they have no intentions of ever calling the kid. Like why bother using a "family" name if none of them actually go by that name.

This LO will be William if it's a boy and I am waiting to meet him to figure out a nickname.

I will probably call him William or Will initially but also love Liam.

Its probably a UO, but I want to meet my kid before picking a nn that may or may not fit them.

I totally get not picking a nn until you meet him/her but in this case the nn will essentially be his real name, as his full name won't be used on a general basis. I know that's probably weird but Willam is a family name and I wouldn't have chosen it if it wasn't.

Will is classic. Liam is way over done and super popular (like Ellie) and Tripp I don't like. I did know Tripp or Trey were NNs for William...? They aren't logical to me. NAF regardless, TBH.

There's always Bill or Billy... my BIL goes by Willie.

Liam is fantastic, but I agree with the previous poster.  Wait to meet him first to determine the best fit.

Maybe it's not an option because it breaks tradition, but I love William. Of your choices I might do Will, but it feels juvenile. Also suggest Bill or Billy. Apparently Wiley is a nn too, which sounds kind of cool!

I like Tripp. It's a cool nn. I don't think of Palins. Liam and Will are too overdone for me. I like Trey too.

    Tripp and Trey are not nn for Wiliam, they are terms/nn used for boys that are named "the third" of any name.
