Hello everyone!

A little about me - TTGP for a little under two years, no cysts on ovaries but diagnosed as PCOS due to other symptoms, I hadn't had regular periods in over 5 years so this was clearly problematic. My OBGYN prescribed Metformin for irregular periods and anticipated insulin resistance in April 2015, cycles became fairly regular after starting the 2000 mg Metformin.  Proceeded with 3 unmonitored cycles of 5 mg of Femara with no luck.

I started seeing an RE in January of this year and was immediately diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, lost 40 pounds in 3 months and put diabetes into remission.  This month we did our first IUI (husband is completely normal with a pre-wash count of 90 million and a post-wash count of 22 million).  The IUI was poorly timed as I got my LH surge on Saturday and I ovulated (felt significant ovulation pain) on Sunday and didn't get to do IUI until Monday morning at 9 a.m.  AF is due this weekend so now I'm just playing the waiting game.

I had a few problems this cycle and I'm not feeling great about my RE.  He doesn't do an ultrasounds and the office also isn't open on Sundays.  Has this been the norm in your experience?  Also wondering if I should ask about the trigger shot so that I can make sure that the timing is right and I don't have a wasted cycle.  We will be doing up to 4 IUIs and then going to IVF.

Thank you in advance for reading  my post and I look forward to getting to know everyone.

ETA - All day 3 levels came back normal, HSG which was horrifically painful showed no blockages, and 8 dpo (7 days fell on Sunday) showed progesterone levels at an 11.5.  Doctor said that this was great and indicative of ovulation, however, I've read on multiple sites that 15 is the lowest measurement acceptable for medicated cycles.  I had another 7dpo progesterone level done last August and that one was 12.9.

Welcome and congrats on getting your diabetes in remission and regulating your cycles. My RE isn't open on Saturdays or Sundays.

  • Thanks Msjen11, I worked really hard to get everyone moving along.  He told me that as long as I put my diabetes into remission I would be able to come back in and I ended up meeting and exceeding my goal.

I've only done one cycle so far, by mine did daily ultrasounds and blood work 4 days after finishing Clomid.  The office is only open M-F, so luckily everything fell during the week for me.  I would definitely ask about the trigger shot, it was super easy to do just a little pricey.  But so is everything when it comes to fertility treatments. :)
  • Welcome, and I'm sorry about what you're going through.  Congrats on putting your diabetes into remission and for all that weight loss!!

This thread is the first I'm hearing of RE offices not being open on weekends.  Mine is open 7 days a week, and I would think that is absolutely essential considering what we're dealing with here.  My 2nd IUI was on Saturday, and I've had plenty of ultrasounds on Saturdays as well to monitor follicle growth.  I would be furious if my IUI wasn't timed properly because the office wasn't open on a Sunday!  I would definitely ask about a trigger shot.  There are also medications (like ganirelix acetate) that can delay ovulation, which might be needed in your case if your body decides it's time to ovulate on a weekend.

  • Congratulations on getting your diabetes under control! I can't even imagine how tough that would be so kudos to you!

I've never heard of an office not being open on the weekends either. My clinic has multiple locations within the city/suburbs and while all of them aren't open for procedures 365 days/yr one always is without driving distance and most are always open for weekend monitoring. I usually had several ultrasounds during my IUIs to make sure I had a dominate follicle, not too many, lining was looking good, etc and also did the trigger shot. Are there any other clinics in your area that you can look into? If your having doubts, I believe it's your intuition telling you something and I would encourage you to look at all your options and ask lots of questions. This process is stressful enough and feeling like you aren't getting 100% correct treatment/care is only going to make things that much more stressful.
  • Hello, I am new here also. My RE is open 7 days a week, every day of the year to ensure treatment on any day necessary. I think it's very unfair for you to be paying money for cycles that are possible going to waste. My advice would be to look into maybe seeing a different RE. Good luck to you with everything.
  • Just wanted to chime in that my RE clinic (at a large research & teaching hospital) doesn't do any monitoring or trigger shots for oral (clomid or femera) medicated IUI cycles. They only monitor for injectable medicated IUI cyles (not sure if they do trigger shots or not). They are open on weekends though.

One thing I've learned on here is how incredibly different the protocol is at every clinic! What's important is that you're comfortable with the protocol your RE follows and that they are able to adequately answer all of your questions explaining why they use that protocol and not something different. I brought questions to my first RE appointment about all of the different protocols I read on here and we were able to discuss why he does/does not do certain things. He was able to provide me with research & statistics to back up his decisions, which in turn make me comfortable with our plan.

  • Thank you all for your kind responses.  I agree, I think it's time to start pursuing other RE options.  I'm going to make some phone calls tomorrow to see what the protocols are for other offices.  Hopefully, we can get an office that is more in tune with me and will listen when I have concerns.  Again, thank you all!  I'm looking forward to talking to people who understand how difficult this process is and don't just tell me "if you're stressed it will never happen you should relax then you'll totally get pregnant."
