Sharing in public

I took DD out to a storytime today and I noticed that there were two types of moms...ones that are constantly trying to make their little ones share (9-18 months) and there was me who only gave toys back that DD took away but didn't care if she shared or not...what do you think is proper etiquette?

Re: Sharing in public

  • When I took DD to storytime yesterday, I noticed the same thing. I don't care if she shares her toys, but when she snatches something from another kid, I take it from her and give it back and tell her that "we don't take, sharing is nice."

  • it depends on the age, I wouldnt make DS share, (but if he takes something he has to give it back) because he doesn't understand sharing... If he were older I would...

  • Yeah, if she takes something that doesn't belong to her, I give it back.  But otherwise, they just don't get the concept of sharing yet so why force an issue they simply cannot grasp?

  • I've been thinking about it and if I take away a toy from DD because she ripped it out of someone's hand, I'm doing the same thing as she did.  Maybe that's why it takes kids so long to learn to share. ??  WDYT?

  • Good thought regardin snatching things from kids.  I found an article in parents from a couple years ago about sharing.  It was great.  But I encourage Freddie to share when another kid comes in to sort of say want to join me or play with me but I also discourage him taking toys by asking him to share.  He is just starting to understand possession.  I would love to take credit for this but I can't my DH taught Freddie to say goodbye to things if he is not sharing or we need to leave a play area.  Freddie is so proud to say bye bye he walks away generally without a fit!
