Stupid Questions Sunday 5.8

I know its pretty late for stupid questions but I HAVE a question and didn't see this thread up yet soooo...here it is. Apologies if my crazy tired brain missed it.

I used the search function but couldn't find a place where people actually talked about where they purchased a fetal doppler, so my question is...who has one and where did you buy it? Amazon is always my go to but, alas, no fetal dopplers! Weird.

Here is my stupid question! I am 10 weeks 3 days. This is me on an empty stomach. Is anyone else this outrageously bloated??? I can't be showing yet, right? I heard the uterus doesn't protrude from the pelvis until 2nd trimester. So then how do I explain this protruding gut that wasn't there before?

ETA don't mind the mess, we are moving :)

    Here's a stupid question:

Do you add formula to registries?

I would love to breastfeed, but I don't want to assume it will be easy for me. My mom was asking me about my registry today and I got to thinking about it. Thank you!

I wouldn't. Formula usually has a pretty tight expiration date. So if you don't end up using it or don't use it for a while, it'd go to waste.
Also, if you shop at Motherhood or Babies R Us it's very likely you'll get free samples of formula in the mail. If you have trouble breastfeeding you can almost always get free samples from your OB and pediatrician as well.
  • dmontgodmontgo member
@doodleoodle Wow, awesome! Motherhood gave me a bottle which was cool, and some coupons and samples of detergent and such. Do you have to sign up for the samples? Or are their places you recommend to sign up for freebies?
  • @dmontgo - When you select a pediatrician, say that you're looking into formulas just to supplement if needed, and ask if they have any free samples. They get hit up by Enfamil and Similac all the time, so they should have them around. We lucked out because my dad is a pediatrician, so he snagged us samples to help supplement.

@LinziLoo09 Thank you so much for the info! Learning a lot. :)
  • @dmontgo   You can sign up for free samples/care packages from the formula companies (and other places - I forget them all). I got many free samples of the powder and the liquid, then got $5 off coupons for many many months.

@shara3333 Thank you for the tip! I'm scoping them out now :)
  • @dmontgo I just signed up for Motherhood's new mother program where you get the bottle and magazines and a care package from enfamil just arrived in the mail one day. It had 2 cans of formula and several formula pouches for when you're "on the go".
  • @dmontgo you also have to take into consideration possible sensitivities. For instance, I pumped and supplemented with formula (for 3 months then I gave up... Womp) but my daughter had a sensitive tummy so we needed to supplement with a special formula. Not all formulas are created equal! Also, the hospital usually has little single-serve bottles as well and the nurses are usually more than willing to send you home with a stock pile!

@PrettyPalomino so much bloat here, too(and I'm only 6 weeks!) I waited so long to bust out the maternity clothes with my DD, but I've already said screw it. I can fit into my regular jeans, but some of my maternity ones are just so much more comfortable and no one knows they're maternity so whatevs.
  • dmontgodmontgo member
@Christinaruth74 I had been thinking about that since my mom told me I had a sensitive tummy (still do bleh) and DH was a colicky baby. I've seen some sensitive formulas for those issues; is it safer to use those by default? I apologize for all of the questions; I have never really been around babies at all. >. <
  • @dmontgo no apologies needed! We've all been there before! No, I think they recommend starting off with the regular stuff and then switching if need be.
  • @PrettyPalomino I'm glad you posted that picture! I'm in the same boat (although I also don't seem to wear my bloat so well!). I'm a little more roll-y than round at this point but it is significantly different than a month ago. I'm almost 9 weeks along, FTM. This is way more bloat than I was expecting at this stage. Probably some of it is real weight gain because the only way I ward off the nausea is not letting my stomach get empty (I have a bag of oyster crackers next to me at all times), but definitely not all of it! I am a surgeon and scrubs are not comfortable when tight! I need to start looking into bigger sizes, which will be a dead giveaway. I was hoping not to tell people at work until well into 2nd trimester (girl in man's world type of job) but man, I feel so big already!
  • Also, they will give you samples at the pedi of the "gentle" formula to see if that helps first before buying a ton. Feeding is just one of those trial and error things regardless of how you do it. You'll figure it out :)
  • Also @dmontgo pediatricians generally recommend that once you choose a brand, you stick with that brand to keep the baby's stomach from getting upset. So look for a brand with a lot of options for sensitive tummies or even allergies, if you can. We had a lot of luck with Enfamil in helping with gas relief and extra vitamin supplements for the baby, but there are a lot of good companies to consider.

  • I have a stupid question...
This Mother's Day has me super emotional. I have been Mom to SD since she was 3 months old. Now she is turning 12 in November. I also have DS who is 20 months. I never thought I could love another child as much as I loved SD and then boom... it happened. But what if it happened because he was my first biological LO? What if this baby comes and I don't have any love left? I had so much Mommy and me time with SD that DS never had, and now new baby will certainly never have because he or she has 2 older siblings wanting/needing attention to. Can this be done? (See stupid question because obviously lots of people do it.) And will be other children hate me for bringing another baby into their lives? (Even though they LOVE each other so much?)

  • @R0824H I started mine with DS about 20 weeks (about 8 weeks prior to my first shower) but I don't know if there is ever a time too early necessarily as you can always add/delete from it.

  • @R0824H - I don't think there's a 'too early', only a too early to share it with others.  I did one last weekend even though we won't have a shower this time around.  You start getting coupons immediately and  have an organized list of what you need.  We're buying all the stuff for these babies so we need to do it slowly.

@R0824H Honestly I've already been working on one, but haven't shared it with anyone. Right now we're using it like @DiFazette mentioned, like a check list. Some things we are going to get ourselves, though, and it helps us remember. I'm glad I've been starting it early because for a FTM it can be overwhelming to look at the stuff you need. Checklists on Pinterest and the registries themselves have been very helpful, too. :)
  • @SmashJam I bought the Sonoline B online from their website.  It cost me $95 and it was free shipping (I'm in Canada).  We were able to pick up the baby's heartbeat at 9w3d.

I would wait to actually start registering for products till your 20 week scan.  That way you know the gender plus I would just start researching the bigger items now and narrow them down like strollers, car seats, etc. Plus i found with my son that quite a few items ended up being clearanced or no longer available after just a few weeks of registering so you don't want to end up with a list of things you have to delete
  • I quoted the wrong person! I am sorry!

  • Also last Thursday as I was getting dressed for my cross fit class I swear I looked 5 months pregnant because of the bloat! Now everyone definitely knows somethings up!  LOL! My instructor even casually asked if I was in my second trimester yet since we were doing burpees that day.  I said no I just look like it.
  • I hear ya on the bloat! I have been feeling that way since about 5 weeks, and started with a little tummy which has just gotten worse. I was struggling to lose some small love handles before finding out that we were PG, so I stopped at Old Navy last week and got some jeans that will work for this short period of time... and will look at some other brands I normally wear (that won't make my butt look saggy), to add the belly bands. Such a frustrating time.... thankful for loose blouses.

I have started Lists at Target for ideas on what to buy, and the same with Buy Buy Baby. I have heard good things about Toys R Us, too. We'll be getting some stuff from my SIL, so once we know what that all will be, we can start writing down things to actually register for. I am sure we'll do the same process we did for the wedding. Spend a day browsing at all stores and writing stuff down, then going in another day and registering after some research. I may wait until I am closer to 20 weeks before registering.

@JustBored10 this is a good point regardless of when you register.  These stores change their inventory so often things will become unavailable somewhat regularly.  Check your registry and remove/replace anything that says it can no longer be purchased or you'll be without that item (could be something you needed).

  • @JessCL  thanks!

Also @R0824H I started building my registry for something to do in those early days when you like, don't have anything else exciting happening and are just waiting around-I started around this time (I am 9 weeks). As others mentioned, its a great way to keep track of all the stuff you want/random stuff you hear about.

Eventually I made a list on amazon, so when i was waffling between two brands of the same product, I could eventually just move the one I wanted to the registry.
  • I haven't quite started a registry yet but I'm excited to start it! I've been reading tons of reviews on things and there are still some parenting things we want to figure out, like if we want to CD or do disposables or if we want to make our own baby food. Obviously once we make decisions on those things that will change our registry a little, like registering for CDs and a Baby Bullet or whatever it's called. We're planning for our "main" little event to be the sip and see after baby is born so I'm sure that will change what goes on our registry.

Our registry isn't really for people to get us things because even though I'm a FTM I'm not really expecting a shower or anything like that, so a registry is more of a shopping list and a way to get discounts and then if anyone really wanted to get us something or asked what we need, we would have the list along with everything we'd gotten already checked off. This could all change going forward, we're just taking it one day at a time. :)
  • It's not really a stupid question, but it's something my husband and I disagree on. I work from home and told my boss pretty early on I was pregnant, since my MS was interfering with me getting all my work done. DH does not want me to tell my boss anything about my symptoms interfering with my work. Well, today I just can't keep anything down my MS is so bad and I have a project my boss is expecting updates on. I've barely gotten through a quarter of what I need to do by end of day. DH says it sounds like excuses, but it doesn't feel like an excuse when I have to run to the bathroom every few minutes to puke my guts out. Should I let my boss know when my MS is like this? Does it sound like an excuse to you?

  • @ashleaf2018 don't bother with the baby bullet and just use a food processor, same thing and you'll save yourself so much  money. Reuse glass jars for when you make your own purees. I don't recommend making and freezing a ton of food at one time because baby may hate it. Ds didn't eat purees at all and we just did baby led weaning.
