Difficulty eating solids

Hello! My husband and I started cereals and purées with our little girl at 4.5 months and and slowly started adding finger foods at 7 months and she has always been a fantastic eater! She would eat whatever we put in front of her and most days, we couldn't spoon it in fast enough! Now, at 8 months old, she will only eat breads, cereals, rolls, puffs, crackers, etc. She will not eat fruits or vegetables and even if I can manage to get a bite in there, she spits it right back out. Should I be worried at this point? Is there anything else I can try?

Re: Difficulty eating solids

  • I would stop offering the breads, etc at mealtime until she's eating veggies. If it's all that's available, she may eventually give it a go. Try things that are tasty and easy for her to hold, like strips of baked sweet potato, cooked carrots sliced, or banana (in half then quartered lengthwise, you can sprinkle some cereal on it to make it less slippery.

If she's really resistant, try combining them by spreading fruit or veggies on the crackers or bread. Last night we had chili. I made it chunky (diced tomato instead of crushed) so she could feed herself, and mopped up her tray with crusts of bread that she then ate.

  • Are you saying she won't try fruit or veggie finger foods? DS1 had a texture issue and wouldn't touch anything wet or "slime-y" when he was a baby.  It was like he hated to get the mess on his hands and if I tried to "help" he would gag or occasionally vomit as soon as it touched his tounge.  I talked with our pediatrician and a nutritionist who gave me different foods to try and just told me to keep offering.  None of the suggestions really worked (although I hadn't heard the sprinkle of cereal one, that sounds promising!) but one day it just sort of clicked.

I was freaking out because I had been told that LO should be off purees by his first birthday and it was just around the corner.  He was still refusing all other foods except puffs, cereals, bread etc.  About a week before his birthday he grabbed some scrambled egg off of DH's plate and ate it and has been fine ever since. Different babies are just different I think.  DS2 really prefers finger foods over purees and would rather feed himself.  We've done the exact same with both kids with completely different results. I would just keep offering different finger foods and feed her purees until she decides to go for it.
  • Agree with @forevereverafter  she has obviously fallen in love with some carbs. I imagine you should probably take them away and get her back on veggies and fruits. The breads and crackers and processed refined stuff dont have any nutritional value so you would be better off cutting those out. Get her back on the right track. My son has literally had none of those things because I am afraid he would do the same thing. He also rarely has fruits. It's mostly veggies because I don't want him to favor that stuff as he grows up you know?
