Listeria - Kroger Mixed Veggies

Ughh semi-freaking out bc we just received a call from Kroger telling us the Simple Truth Organic Frozen Mixed Veggies have been recalled due to Listeria. Literally purchased (and ate) this past week. I've felt fine, but I know listeria doesn't always show any outward symptoms. Just wanted to give you all a heads up in case you are Kroger shoppers, as well. AND if you want to reassure me that our baby will be fine, I will take that too!!!

P.S. It is so frustrating feeling like you are making healthy, safe decisions for your baby when ORGANIC VEGETABLES end up being the risky thing you consumed?! STM so I don't consider myself extra paranoid or over the top, but come on!!

Re: Listeria - Kroger Mixed Veggies

  • I got the call Wednesday from Costco.  Thank goodness I hadn't eaten that corn yet.   They recalled a bunch of organic and non veggies and fruits.

  • @molson1 I don't know the typical "turnaround" for getting sick from listeria, but my husband got it from Kroger salad back in January, but it was the next day my husband was incredibly ill with vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Listeria symptoms can occur pretty quickly but can also take up to 2 months to appear.  I believe it's something like 20 times more likely for a pregnant woman to show symptoms than an average adult.

  • I got a call from Costco too, our veggies were purchased in January and are long gone. No sign of anyone being sick, so I'm thinking we're fine.

I haven't fully researched this recall, but I believe the effected products were quite limited and the foods are being recalled as a precaution. An extremely broad and expansive precaution, considering how many brands were involved for sure!

    It's always something!

  • I second what @SuperNerd42 said.  The original recall was much smaller, but it was expanded (probably after pressure from the FDA) out of an abundance of caution.  So far, they've linked 8 cases of illness to the processing plant.  Six of those eight were in California.

This recall frustrates me because the news stories seem to be emphasizing the organic vegetables.  The recall actually effected both conventional and organic products.  AND it appears that the listeria didn't come from the vegetables themselves but from the processing equipment used to freeze the vegetables.  So please don't give up on organic fruits and vegetables if you buy them now.
