TTC After a Loss

1 step forward, 3 steps back

I posted about this on the miscarriage/loss board, too. I know that some people frequent both boards, but this one seems a little more active. Anyways, I felt like I took a step forward this morning because the RMA called and scheduled my first appointment for 5/16. Took a few steps back this afternoon, though, when my OB called and said my levels are still high and she's concerned that there's either leftover tissue or the potential of a partial molar pregnancy. The partial molar thing really confuses me and freaks me out.

The pathology report said that I didn't have a molar pregnancy, but apparently there was 1 thing about the report (excess fluid or something) that in combination with my HCG levels is making my doctor suspicious. If the ultrasound shows no extra tissue, she's going to treat me as if I possibly had a partial molar, which means I'd be benched for 6 months. Does this seem overly cautious? Has anyone else had experience with this? Can a partial molar pregnancy look like a normal baby? I know I should trust my doctor, but it's just shitty news to get.

  • That is shitty news - I have no experience with this - could you get a second opinion when you see your RMA?

@catiecatp, that's a good idea. I definitely will ask for a 2nd opinion. I guess it's better to be safe then sorry, but ugh.

  • I don't know anything about molars pregnancies, but I am very sorry for the trouble and frustration. I agree about seeking a second opinion - it will only make you feel more confident in your next steps.

  • I am sorry there is this void of unknown and I hope the testing can be scheduled promptly.

With my first loss, it was originally suspected that I had a partial molar pregnancy. My loss was at 14 weeks. I was confused why they thought this b/c on all 3 u/s the baby appeared to be developing normally, had normal hb, etc. When I asked more questions, the Dr suspected this b/c my HCG was staggeringly high. I actually had the 3rd u/s pre-loss b/c they suspected multiples b/c my HCG was literally off the charts high (400k+ at 10 wks), but sure enough only one (then healthy looking) baby in there.

It turned out not to be a partial molar after the testing. However, my Dr had discussed with me prior that if it turned out to be one I would have to be benched at least 6 mo, which obviously is devastating to even consider.

I am hopeful your is not a partial molar after all and this extra worry is for nothing after all. If there is no excess tissue though I would want more clarification on why your Dr would assume a partial molar when the testing was negative for that.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

  • From what I just read, you can be benched up to a year with a partial molar pregnancy. It also says this though, "in a partial molar pregnancy, the beta HCG levels rise at a slower rate and often to a lower level than a normal pregnancy". I don't want to be Dr. Google but the few sights I read say there are lower HCG levels in pm pregnancies. I would get a second opinion before making any decisions though.

These are the sights I checked out.
