Fenugreek

Hey mamas! I haven't posted in here in a while! Was wondering if anyone has taken fenugreek and had a bad experience with it? I just picked some up yesterday and took 1 in the afternoon and 1 before bed and I've felt sick to my stomach all night  :( I'm hoping it's from something else, but I have a feeling it's the fenugreek.  Thanks in advance!

I bought fenugreek last week and I've been taking it now for 5 days. I feel fine of it and have had no side effects. I definitely have noticed an increase in my Supply. But I believe the recommended dose is three -  610 milligrams- three times a day. Studies show that taking less than that has no impact on your breastmilk Supply.Of course if it's making you sick then I wouldn't take it.

  • Try drinking Mother's Milk Tea instead of taking the Fenugreek. You can get it at most grocery stores but I got mine through Amazon. Since the fennel is less concentrated in that form it may be easier on your stomach. I drink it roughly every other day and it has helped me a lot but if you're really struggling with supply you can drink it more often. It has a licorice kind of smell to it and I don't really like licorice but have found the tea to be pretty tasty.

  • Not sure if it makes a difference but I try to take it when I eat and I usually drink half a glass or Gatorade or water
  • I went and bought some fenugreek yesterday and it says 2 capsules 3 times a day and not to use while breastfeeding. I'm so confused...

It is my understanding that it is safe for nursing as long as you're healthy. If you have diabetes it may cause hypoglycemia (which is low blood sugar). There are numerous studies proving beneficial for increasing milk supply. I'm no pharmacist or doctor, just an RN with minimal knowledge of fenugreek prior to taking it myself a week ago, but I have researched it quite a bit.  However if you're concerned speak to your Dr.
Also the dosage for increasing milk supply is 3  580-610mg capsules 3 times a day.
  • I took it when LO was about 2 months old and it didn't cause any discomfort for me. I also didn't see a huge difference in milk production. Hope it works better for you.

  • Mother's Milk tea has definitely helped me.  I've been drinking that, and trying to pump every 2 hours (instead of 4, her usual time between feeding).  I'm getting an extra 5-8 ounces a day!
  • I've only been taking 6 capsules a day because I keep forgetting and i can tell a huge difference. I had been struggling to produce enough for the next day's bottles, but now I've got some extra and can start stashing again. I donated the majority of my stash to a local airman whose wife died unexpectedly and of course then my son started eating more and I couldn't keep up.

  • God bless you for helping him out.
