Stationary activities for a 20 month old!

Alright ladies, my 20 month old is scheduled for hip surgery in early June for hip dysplasia and will be in a hip spica cast for 6-12 weeks afterwards and left pretty immobile. He's a monkey and is going to hate sitting still, so I want to do my best to keep him busy. What I'm looking for are just some suggestions on activities safe for this age and can be done sitting or lying still.

Books, puzzles, electronic toys with lots of buttons/music, play dough, coloring. I try to limit screen time, but maybe some educational apps on an iPad if you're open to the idea and he's really getting bored or you need a break?
