3 months too early for sleep regression?

I'm aware of the 4 month sleep regression but could it happen at 3 months? DS turned 3 months yesterday and for the last 3 nights has been sleeping much less than normal. He was sleeping 7pm-5am every night but now is sleeping 10-4 and occasionally up at 2 as well

Re: 3 months too early for sleep regression?

  • Us too starting about a week ago. Ds turns 3 months this week. We went from sleeping 6 hour stretches to 2 or 3 hours at most. Last night I was up every hour until I caved and brought him into bed with me around 2. So. Sleepy.

  • This! I was considering posting this exact thread. LO will be 3 months next week and usually sleeps for 5 hour stretches, but the past three days she's been up every 2-3 hours at night. She also refuses to nap for more than 40 minutes-1 hour.
  • Glad to see I'm not alone. Does anyone know how long it typically lasts?
  • LO was 11 weeks last Friday and this was her last week. Between Sunday and Wednesday, she slept maybe 20 hours total. I was literally going to die from exhaustion. Thankfully, she has been back on track. Yesterday she slept from 5-8:30pm and slept from 10pm-8am this morning. Of course I'm at work and can't enjoy it.
  • Haha...this is literally my life since he was born. If he regresses in sleep, we'll be in the *minutes* instead of *hours* category.
  • Every baby is different and some may develop faster than others. The reason for the 4 month sleep regression is because of a major development they go through that affects their sleep cycle. So it sounds like your baby is just advanced (unfortunately in this case!) mine is showing signs of teething and she's only 2.5 months old :(
  • I was reading that it could have a lot do with sleep times. Like missing the time they like to go sleep ( I believe its 1-2 hours after their last nap). If he was used to going to bed at 7 and now its 10 it could be throwing everything else off at night? I don't know but my baby is I think the same age as yours. I do hear her wake up in the middle of the night but she typically puts herself back to sleep as long as she is swaddled. If she isn't than she wakes up more often? I hope he gets back to his old self soon. It makes the huge difference when they sleep good that's for sure.

I guess I should have clarified lol. He was eating at 6/6:30 and then sleeping 7pm-5am but lately he's been eating 6/6:30 then sleeping 7-8:30, eating again then sleeping 10-4. He sleeps swaddled in his crib and does great putting himself to sleep. He just talks a few minutes then goes to sleep. He fusses sometimes in the middle of the night but would put himself back to sleep. Now he's screaming when he wakes instead of going back to sleep. It's definitely no fun!

Almost to the day at 12 weeks my lo started his 3 month growth spurt. They sleep way less, eat more, and can be fussy.

  • There's also a developmental leap around now. My guy is extra wired as well.

  • Oh ok now I know what you meant. I am so sorry. Poor guy and mama! Hopefully it doesn't last long......do you think he might want more formula at a feeding?

That was the thought I had earlier today so I've been offering 6oz at a feeding instead of 5 but his naps have still been terrible today. We'll see how tonight goes!
  • Well good luck! I am hoping for the best my little one has been a great sleeper too...I hope it lasts. My first was a complete mess most nights and still is at two years old.
  • Also if it helps my little one doesn't nap good at all but sleeps from 7-5 most nights then back to sleep until 8. I think daycare wears her slap out.
  • My guy is 3 months and a great sleeper and I'm so worried that around 4 months it's all going to change. I can barely function on 7 hours of sleep as it is, so i really hope he continues sleeping well, because if he doesn't and I don't get sleep, I'm going to be a mess!!
  • So how did he do?
  • He did good last night! We were offering 6 oz before bed and first thing in the morning and then 5oz the rest of the time but yesterday we offered 6oz all day and then 7oz before bed. He ate 6.5 oz at 7pm then cried about ten min in his crib before falling asleep (normally he would just talk a bit then sleep- no crying). He fussed at 3:15 for a bit but never full on cried so I let him be. By 3:30 he was asleep again and woke at 5 to eat. Today's been much better too! He's awake longer between naps and still taking 45 min naps but is back to being happy when he's awake instead of crying. I think it's probably just a growth spurt! I hope your LO continues to be a good sleeper! It makes such a huge difference
