Sciatica!!!

Is any one else suffering from pain in the lower back, radiating into the butt cheek, and maybe even down their leg? I am pretty active at work, and was running several times a week before I got pregnant. In the past week though, I have been suffering with Sciatica if I am too active or on my feet too much in one day. I really can't help how much time I'm on my feet. I work in retail management, and feel like I often just make laps of the store, walking an average of over 10,000 steps a day. Some days I come home and can barely walk because of the severe pain in my butt cheek! It usually goes away over night, but is there anything I can try to relieve it without going to sleep for 8 hours?

Re: Sciatica!!!

  • I am seeing a prenatal chiropractor for mine and it has made a huge difference! I tried a heating pad for mine as well and all it did was seem to aggravate it. So then I switched to ice a few times a day and all pain is gone. DH bought one of those gel bead freezer wraps for the lower back for me from Walgreens. I love it because it freezes fast and it's comfortable to sit on laying in bed, doing my makeup in the morning, or watching TV.

  • Not much help, but I had the same issue when I was pregnant with DS. This time I have had some back issues and saw a chiropractor a couple of times. It definitely helped, so it may be worth looking into. I'm just praying it doesn't get as bad as last time, the final few weeks of my first pregnancy were torture!

  • I had this problem with DS2 and my hubby got me this

It really helped and I totally recommend it. I plan to use it this time around as well if I have this issue.

  • My chiropractor helps a lot with mine. I actually haven't felt that pain in awhile after he started working on that.
  • I had it bad with DS1 and have it again with this pregnancy, though not quite as bad. My OB referred me to physical therapy, but I haven't tried it yet. Might be worth looking into!

    Just keep swimming.
  • Yes, I have terrible sciatica pain. Prenatal yoga has helped immensely!
  • I am hardly on my feet (desk job) and my pain can be really severe some days. I think it's more about where the baby is positioned as they grow.

I'm sure you are right. Mine just tends to be worse the more active I am. :(
  • I had it really bad for about three or four weeks and just as of last week it seems to have subsided. I didn't really do anything for it except try to walk it out.
  • Chiropractor  has been a huge help. I wish I had done it when I was pregnant  with my second because it got so bad it hurt to walk. This time, whenever pain starts I go to the chiropractor and I feel better for weeks. I also just got a pregnancy  corset, which helps a ton when I'm on my feet all day. Ask for a referral  to PT and ask for one. Also someone said yoga, and when I wasn't pregnant  I did yoga for a couple years, and it really helps with all sorts of back and leg pain. Just don't go too crazy, it is easy to hurt yourself if you try to do too much before your body is ready.

Yes, I've been feeling it on one side going down from my lower back and into my hip joint, sometimes my upper butt. I attributed it to picking up DS wrong and pulling something, but it's been happening often enough that I think I might say something to my doc.

  • I have absolutely HORRIBLE lower back pain at night! Basically It's not bad until I wake up in the middle of the night and I can't even move my body at all without there being a very sharp pain. Forget even standing up. I don't know what it is or if it's Sciatica, but this pain is so intense but only at night. (I sleep on my sides with pillows supporting me behind my back and between my knees.

  • I had it pretty bad for about 10 days (weeks 25-26 ish), couldn't go down stairs, it was agony to put pants on. I did ice, heat, baths, stretching, and, after shutting it down for a week, went back to pure barre, and of course it improved and then went away in about 5 days. So there's hope your pain will resolve itself, I know I was so worried that I wouldn't recover, it was awful.
