Is itching normal in the 3rd trimester??

For the last few days, I've had on/off itching on my hands (fingers, back of hand and below the palm, but not on it). I also get it on my feet (the top, the toes and the ankles, NOT the soles). It's not a 24/7 thing, but it will come in episodes where I'll scratch a lot and it's uncomfortable.  I heard this could be a serious condition and I do have an appointment on Tuesday with my doctor, but I'm really scared. Should I visit the ER and get some blood tests now or just wait until Tuesday? I'm 36 weeks

  • I would call your on call doctor and see what they want you to do. I had cholestasis of pregnancy and they took it very seriously and I was put on medication right away. You are so close to the end, they may have a different plan of action. I was only 31 weeks when I was diagnosed.

I know it's scary when you read things on line but try not to stress yourself out. I found that the more I panicked, the more i would itch. So try to relax until you've spoken to your doctor.

  • Any update?  I also posted last week that I had this start around 36 weeks.  Between my dry skin and anemia (which can also cause itchiness) my doctor wasn't super concerned, especially as PP said it's so close to the end anyway at 36 weeks.  I'm keep close track of baby's movements and also drinking dandelion root tea, taking my iron etc.  The itchiness is come and go and definitely not out of control.  Hoping it's just normal pregnancy stuff.  Let us know what your doc said!

  • I've had some itching on my hands, feet, and belly but I just chalked it up to the swelling, I didn't know it could be an issue. I'll mention it at my next appointment.

  • I was sent for a blood test this morning bc of itching on my hands and ankles. Apparently it can be connected to liver issues.
  • Yes, the doctor saw me yesterday and ordered blood work. I do not know if this will take long, as he said it could be a week. But the way I was itching indicated that it's likely cholestasis (liver dysfunction). I'm 37 weeks tomorrow so I go back Monday and if there is cholestasis present, then I will be induced next week.  For now, I'm on some medication that starts with a U.
