3-4 month daytime sleep

Those of you whose LO's have experienced sleep consolidation, how has it been? What were his/her napping patterns before, what are they now, and how did the transition happen?

My LO is 14 weeks. He has been a 45-55 minute napper with 1.5-hour awake intervals for weeks and weeks, but in the last week or so his morning nap has intermittently been much longer (2-2.5 hours) but it's not consistent and I don't see it correlated to longer periods of wakefulness yet. Afternoon and evening look the same as always. So basically we've dropped from 5 short naps to 1 long and 3 short.

I'm interested to hear others' experiences, especially those of you who are ahead of me in the process.

Re: 3-4 month daytime sleep

  • My LO did this for a week or so around 14 weeks. He would randomly take a 3 hour nap in the middle of the day. It was really weird as he is a very consistent napper with 4 45min-1hr naps throughout the day. He is back to his usual schedule, so I put it down to the start of this next leap. It was also right around the time he started rolling from belly to back and really grabbing things to pull them to his mouth.

  • DS takes about 3 naps a day.  Sometimes 4, if they all end up being short 30-40 minute ones.  He's just about 20 weeks, 14 adjusted.  His 1st nap is always between 8-9 am.  He wakes around 6:30-7:00.  It only lasts for 35-50 minutes typically.  His next nap will be around 11:30-12:30 and can be another shorter one that only lasts 45 minutes-1 hour, but sometimes it's his longer one that is anywhere from 2-3 1/2 hours.  He will then fall asleep again around 3-4 and if his first 2 were on the shorter end, this one ends up being his longer stretch. Bedtime is always between 7-8 p.m.  The only time it goes later than 8, is if that last nap takes him into 5-6 PM, and then he ends up having a bottle, and being up for a little bit before he can go back down again for the night.

He still only has maybe 1.5-2 hours of an awake period, before he's ready for some kind of nap.  Whether that be a short one or a longer one.

Little man will be 4 months on the 5th. He is currently in the process of dropping to 3 naps from 4. He usually wakes around 6-7 unless it's a leap or something of that sort he will wake crazy times. First nap is generally around 9 most often this is his long one lasting 1-2 hours depending on if I'm holding him or not those tend to be the only long ones I get. His second is around 12/1 and his third is around 3/4. I usually make sure naps are done by 5 and put him to bed around 630/7. Some nights are tough to get him down and it ends up being a little later. Some times the naps are as short as 20-30 mins if I put him in his crib. If they're particularly short he tends to go to bed on the earlier side so he isn't overtired.

I was doing some random googling and found this article that really helped out line what sleep should look like based on age. No idea at all how valid or credible it is but it gave me a simple idea of what the goal should be. Obviously all babies are different and could not be comparable to what the article said at all but at least for me it was spot on and I found it super helpful!

Mum having. Major nap issues with my baby. He sleeps like an angel through the the night but refuses to nap unless being held. Trying to find the right approach to help us both out!

Thought this was an interesting podcast and helpful with sleep schedule as we are now approaching the 4 month mark.
  • @amberjinnett - Exact same with my LO!  She sleeps in her crib at night no problem (though not more than 6 consecutive hours yet) but during the day she will wake up almost immediately if she's not being held.  :/  Makes for some challenging days in terms of getting things done, but at least she's happy as a clam to nap on mom.  ;)

My LO is 15 weeks and I feel like he's all over the place still... He's also my 3rd so we are often on the go.

He usually goes down in his crib for bed around 9:30, sleeps until 2ish, eats, sleeps until 5ish, eats and then sleeps until around 9.  He pretty consistently takes a nap around 10:30AM for an hour and half or 2 hours. Then the rest of the day are sporadic cat naps 20 minutes here and there.

Im curious as well to see if anyone has more consolidated naps patterns yet.

Mine went through the same thing, around 14 weeks (he's 15 now) he started taking longer naps but I figured he was most likely going through a growth spurt or leap. He's still sleeping great at night (goes down between 8&9 and won't wake up until 7-9) so I haven't worried about it much. As far as the length of his naps I mean. I am starting to tell what his cries are for and know that if he's been up for a few hours, most likely he needs a nap. It's straightening back out to his usual 1-1/2 hour naps.
  • What is this "daytime sleep" you speak of?

Ugh, but seriously, Brynlee sucks at daytime sleep. She pretty much just won't... unless she's being held. And preferably by my mom, for whatever reason.
  • My son is the same way! I'm glad to know other babies do this, too.
