Vitamin d for baby?

I'm EBF and read that BF babies usually need vitamin D supplements. LO is 8 weeks old and his pedi has never mentioned it. I just ran across it on Kelly Mom.   I am vitamin d deficient and am on 2000 units daily in addition to my prenatals.  Furthermore, the AAP recommends all BF babies be given 400 IU daily, starting in the first 2 months. It just seems odd that this wasn't mentioned by the pedi. It seems like they would have checked his levels or something.

How many of you give your LO's vitamin d, especially if you are BF? Is this something I should call the pedi about?

Re: Vitamin d for baby?

  • My pedi recommended we give daily vitamin d drops to LO starting at 1 week.

  • My pedi prescribed a liquid oral supplement that has a mix of vitamin d and two others for my bf 8 week old, prescribed it on his first visit.
  • We give vitamin d as well. I would call and ask or just ask at the 2 month appointment of you haven't had it yet.

  • We had the 2 month appt last week and still nobody said anything. They always ask if I'm still BF and I always say yes, so I don't know why they haven't mentioned it or prescribed anything especially with me being vitamin d deficient.

What OTC brand vit d are y'all using? I'm gonna call on Monday and see what's up.
  • I think it's enfamil? Whatever they have at target!

  • Both our pedis recommended it for both kids. Current one said to start on day 8.
  • My dr has been bugging me about the D drops since our first visit I think. I had to give them with my other 3 EBF babies as well. A lot of Drs will recommend the tri-vi-sol but it looks and smells awful so I order vitamin D drops from Amazon. You just apply one drop of vitamin D oil to your nipple before nursing once per day. When baby is finished breastfeeding you can add the drop to other things like yogurt, etc. I don't always remember to do it but I'd say Over half the time I do.

im Vit D deficient also and take 2000mg of Vit d per day. I was going to ask if you live in to south or somewhere that gets a lot of sunlight because here in the northeast I think most pediatricians recommend them from the beginning. I'd call and ask your pediatricians take on them.

Our ped is adamant about it. They actually recommend the Tri-visol but I don't like that it has coloring in it so I give the D drops instead.

when i was EBFing i gave LO D-drops.. 1ml daily. my doctor also didn't mention anything to me. it wasn't until my mom mentioned something to me that i started him on the D-drops.
  • I agree, the tri vi sol smells terrible! We use the d vi sol and it smells fine.

  • Our pedi and nurse at the hospital both instructed us to use it because vitamin D doesn't cross from mom into breast milk. I'm wondering if this is new, because I don't remember doing this with DS? I ordered mine on Amazon, it was the best price I found.

    Anniversary

  • My pedi recommended at our 2 week appointment. I'm taking extra vitamin d supplement as well.

  • We do. Started while she was in the NICU, though with how much you are taking if talk to a doctor before giving more to baby.

I got it at Walgreens, Doctor recommend d it at our first visit
  • Our pediatrician told us to start using it at our 2 week appt. I EBF, but sometimes pump and feed him via the bottle. If I'm giving LO a bottle, I just put a drop in it daily otherwise I put a drop on his pacifier or my nipple before a feeding. We use Carlson Labs Baby's Super D3 drops.
