Fasting

My doc gave me a referral to go get blood work done however didn't mention if I needed to fast beforehand. I called back today and they didn't pick up and I am finding conflict answers online. The tests are tomorrow. Did anyone go to a testing center and get blood work done? Did you fast? The tests are hemoglobin, hiv, and thyroid. Thanks!

You should be fine to eat. I was told before that fasting is only for stuff like cholesterol.

Do you have an appointment scheduled or are you a walk-in? If you have a scheduled appointment you can probably make a few hours without eating as we do that every night to sleep and such. Do you have like a health call in service or anything that you can call?

I have an appointment scheduled for 2:45 p.m so if I have to fast I will definitely reschedule it for an early morning appointment. I am trying to ask the question on the patient portal. Hopefully they respond soon. Thanks for responding.

Thyroid, HIV, and Hb shouldn't require fasting as far as I know. 

(I'm not a doctor yet and can't give medical advice, but I've gotten a LOT of blood work over the years.)

Those don't require fasting. I've had those and was not told to fast. Glucose and cholesterol are the only things that matter, I'm pretty sure.

Also not a Dr. but had to have those same three test early in the pregnancy, as well as some others, and wasn't required to fast.

Actually am a doctor. No need to fast for thyroid, hiv, or hb. You're good

Medical professionals will usually specify if you need to be fasting, and will almost always schedule those appointments first thing in the morning (or at least before noon), so I think you're all set to eat.
