I did! My OB did it twice. Once on my due date, and again 10 days later. lol The first time did nothing. While she was doing it the second time, my water broke (from the pressure). I still wound up being induced because labor did not start on its own. And LO was born the next day, at 41w4d.
Didn't do anything for me, but that could have just been me. Baby never "dropped" for me, I wasn't dilated at all, no contractions, no BH. But for others, I've heard it can move things along.
I had mine swept at 40 weeks, then again at 40 weeks 5 days, and DS was born at 40+6. It's just like anything else...it will only move things along if baby and your body are both ready. I believe that I would have had DS that day regardless of the sweep, and don't think my sweet at 40 weeks got anything moving. From anecdotes I've gathered it seems that a sweep isn't going to do much unless you're already 2-3 cm, but who knows!
FTM, but I'm wondering if OB did this at my last appointment, as it was VERY painful compared to the first cervix check and I lost my plug the following evening. No labor yet though!
I did at 36 weeks. My water broke and I had my son the next day. I was 70% effaced at the time of the sweep however, my doctor seemed just as surprised as I was that it worked so quickly
My last pregnancy I had one done at 38+4 and started having contractions 10 hours later. I'm 39+1 and had it done today but my midwife said the baby was really high and didn't seem hopeful. We shall see.
With DS I had it done at 41w8d and I went home-bloody show and cramping started about 2 hours later. Labored at home for 12 hours or so after that until contrax her strong and I was doubled over in pain
I had it done with DS at around 38 weeks and then again at 40 weeks exactly. Had my son on 40+3. I'm going on Thursday (39+1) hoping that it will do something where it is my second baby?!? I can dream right?
@proudparent2b I am convinced my doctor did it every time with my last pregnancy. It was always painful. I get my first check next week and I am already dreading it.
Question for the group: can the doctor sweep your membranes without telling you?? I feel like they would have to, but again it always hurt so bad last pregnancy I swear that is what he had to be doing. lol

Never had a sweep, couldn't because not dilated or effaced at all. Checks hurt like hell.
@tripledaggerWed95976 wtf? Your ob sweeped at 36 weeks?? Why? Was there a reason? Cause if not that seems really early to sweep.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm 36 1/2 weeks now (at my OB appt now as a matter of fact...) and would not even consider letting them do that this early unless there's a good reason (?!?!).
When I was using my ob before moving to a midwife, she would push for a sweep weekly starting at 37 weeks. Her reasoning is that baby is far enough along that they'll be fine if it actually works, and most of the time it doesn't work. She said that what it did seem to do was keep you from going over 40 weeks. Not real sure about the numbers behind that though. I did it once with DS at 37 weeks and it didn't do much of anything. I declined them from there on out and I had him at 39+1.

Well I was going to be induced at 38 weeks because I had severe hydronephrosis (fluid trapped in my kidney) from a kidney stone trapped in my uteter. However, had I known I would go into labor the next day I would've never agreed to it. My son was in NICU for 6 days because he was having breathing problems... So yah I'm pretty pissed about it.
The only reason I agreed to it is I had read so many stories online that sweeps don't even really work, even when you are close to or past your due date. Also my doctor made it sound like it might not work too. if I could do it over and refuse the sweep I definitely would
39+2 and she wasn't able do a sweep today. I am a 1/2-1 cm and completely soft cervix. So depressing. With my DS I was 3 cm and had a sweep done at this point. Granted he didn't come until 40+3 but I feel like I've made no progress with this LO!

With my second pregnancy, it took multiple sweeps, but he did come shortly after the last attempt.
It really depends if you're body is ready for the progress.
