questions about nursing past 1 year

Natalie is down to 4 sessions a day (although right now it is more as she's teething and just wants to nurse a lot). Some days I am ready to be done with it, while other times I feel totally unready to stop. So my questions are:

1. When you say you BFed (or are BFing) past 1 year, what do you mean by that? Do you mean you haven't introduced cow's milk at all, and are still exclusively BFing? Or do you mean that you have intro'ed cow's milk, but still have at least one nursing session a day?

2. When did you first introduce cow's milk?

I feel like I have more questions than I am thinking of right now. I may be back with more :)

  • THose BF that long... Are you SAHM's? I don't know how all that works yet but isn't hard on you if you work all day?

  • FWIW, yes, I am a SAHM.

  • I have a friend who works and she just BFs in the morning and at night.  She hated pumping so her DD gets formula at daycare.  But she loved their nursing relationship and didn't want it to end, thus the twice-a-day nursing.

  • I nursed until 14 month's and only then quit because I left for ten days.  :)  I loved nursing.  It was just easy for me.

I got to where I was really only nursing at night and I guess once in the morning.

He never took to cows milk..  he gets his calcium with yogurt and cheese.

    good luck! :)

  • we nursed exclusively until around 18 or 19 months, then we introduced cows milk.  we fully weaned at 23 months.  Between 18/19 months and 23 months, we would nurse in the morning and at night and do cows milk in between.

  • We nursed exclusively until right around a year, then introduced cows milk here and there when dropping feedings.  He didn't really take to drinking a lot of whole milk until around 15 months when we dropped to 2 times a day nursing.  I started giving whole milk at meals and water in between, but he started requesting milk more often at some point.  We fully weaned at 18.5 months.

My pedi encourged nursing past a year, especially since he was so attached still.  She said we didn't need to push milk until we were at less than 3 feedings a day, but I started buying it around a year (in smaller quantities) to get him used to it and to encourage weaning.

  • 1. Of course, Esm? just turned a year old, so I'm new to the whole cow's milk thing.  She's still nursing about three times a day and before her naps.

    2. We haven't yet introduced cow's milk.  I wanted to wait for the go-ahead from her pedi, so I plan to try this week to see how she reacts.

We're both pretty attached to nursing and I plan to keep it up until she's no longer interested and her pedi's supportive of that.

  • DD just turned one but we introduced cow milk at 10 months. We slowed nursing gradually and have been at 2x a day for a few weeks. Now we're down to one a day. It's at night before bed and I'm not pushing hard to get rid of it. It's easy and if I'm not around she doesn't worry about it. I was ready to get my life back and this seems like a good compromise for us.

i exclusively bf until right at 1yr. we intro'd cow's milk in between her nursing sessions, and gradually cut out one session at a time. she was completely weaned at about 13.5 mos.

    2. When did you first introduce cow's milk?

we introduced cow's milk right at a year. we mixed it with bm 1oz at a time, until it was all cow's milk.  she had had it before sporadically when she would steal sips from her cousin's cup, and never had a reaction.

i am not a sahm.  i was nursing when with her, but pumping when working, so she would have milk for the next day.

i think if you work in an office setting and have a private place to pump, it's much easier (my bff's office had a private office that she had a key to go to to pump).  i work in outside sales, and was many-a-times pumping in my car, in a parking lot. that was not fun.

  • nursing after a year just means that your baby is still nursing and is more than 12 mos old :)

we introduced cow's milk products (yogurt and cheese, etc) around 8 months. i think we introed milk aroudn 11 mos but he never really liked it. he has yet to drink a sippy of milk and he is 2.

i don't really see milk as a substitute for breastmilk. at one point you start solids and food becomes a supplement to BFing. later on, the baby eats mostly solids and BFing is a supplement to food. truitt's fluid intake of water/milk/juice was never really put in place of BM. in fact, if there was a sub it was likely solid food...
