Placenta Previa anyone?

Hi ladies! I searched the board and could only find an older post..... sorry if this is long

On Monday I was told I had Placenta Previa at 12 weeks (had some bleeding over the weekend). I was told mine was only partial but still need to follow some restrictions.... with having a two year old I can tell this is not going to be too much fun.

How often is your Dr. checking your placenta? I'm only scheduled to see the Dr. for my 16 week and no sono to check anything.... was just curious as I didn't have this with my son.

TIA

Re: Placenta Previa anyone?

  • I had it with my 2 year old. I didn't have mine checked this time around. They said they would check at 20 weeks.
Mine was also partial. They put me on a few restrictions, nothing crazy. I never had any issues. I did, however, have an ultrasound at every appointment in the late part of my 2nd tri and my whole third tri. It finally moved completely out of the way at 36 weeks.
If yours is only partial, there's a very good chance it will move.

  • I was also diagnosed with a partial just last Thursday at 14 weeks.  I was given 5 days bed rest after a pretty heavy bleed and put on pelvic rest indefinitely until my doctor said otherwise.  Other than that they said they'd check at 20 weeks, and then if it hadn't moved, they'd do more frequent ultrasounds after that and into the 3rd trimester. I'm back at work now, was told to take it easy and I'd probably have bleeds again in the future, and only to worry if I filled a pad in less than an hour etc, the normal stuff.
  • I was diagnosed with Placenta Previa at 12 weeks.  I just had an ultra sound at 16 weeks and it has moved up, but not the 2 cm that my office requires so....looks like I have at least another 4 weeks of Pelvic rest.  @SoInLoveCJ2011 I have a 2yo too and it stunk being told that I couldn't lift her, but it's amazing how much they can do if need be.  We transitioned my daughter to the toddler guard rail on her crib so she can get in and out by herself and she has been so wonderful (we don't know why we didn't try this sooner).  I change her on the floor now.  The only thing that stinks is getting in the car.  I have a pretty high suv so i try to hold her hand and assist her into climbing in on the other side of the car, up the seat, and finally into her carseat.  I can't wait till I have no more restrictions.  Hope things resolve themself for you too!

  • @Lauren0216 I was told I have an anterior placenta but wasn't given any restrictions at all. Can I ask why you were? Is it low near your cervix? Don't mean to be nosey, just wondering if this is something I need to ask my OB about.

  • I had partial previa with DD #1. It was diagnosed at 11.5 weeks and by the anatomy scan at 20 weeks it was resolved.

  • @MRSCORKER Previa and an anterior placenta are different. With previa the placenta is either partially or completely covering the cervix. Anterior placenta just means the placenta is attached at the front of your uterus. I hope that helps!

Omg, I knew that. Lol. Can I blame this on pregnancy brain?

  • It is bizarre to me that OBs "diagnose" this at all so early in pregnancy. It's understandable since you had bleeding, but for people without symptoms it just causes unnecessary worry. Some crazy high percentage of women have some degree of previa at 12 weeks, and the majority totally resolve by week 20...and then most that haven't resolved by 20 weeks resolve early third tri.

  • @MRSCORKER yep, exactly what @waterfall213 said.  Mine was very low.  They were surprised that I wasn't bleeding at all.  I was put on restrictions until the placenta moves at least 2cm from the cervix.  Those restrictions include not carrying anything heavier than 5lbs(although my Dr. just told me that since it's moving in the right direction, it's okay to pick up my DD for a second to put her in a shopping cart- Let me just tell you that letting a 2 year old run the store as you try to shop is not at all fun), no running, jogging, or jumping, and no sex.  Apparently it's quite common so I'm not really all that worried right now, just looking forward to having no restrictions.

  • Exactly what @NoraAurora said. I had a complete previa that hemorrhaged with DS. That plus preterm labor landed me in the high risk category this time. My OB and MFM won't even look at my placenta until 20w because often the placenta covers the cervix at this point and is considered normal.

  • I say all that to say that you are likely to migrate, especially with a partial, way before its concerning and definitely before delivery. If not, pelvic rest and CS.

  • I had an ultrasound last week at 16 weeks and found out yesterday that I had placenta pravevia. I'm waiting to hear back from my OB on exactly how bad it is because I'm due to fly next week for a work conference and they're telling me I may not be able to go. I'm hopeful that it will resolve itself by the 20 wk ultrasound but I'm not sure. I had a leep procedure done last year that may have increased my odds of this happening  and it's super scary to read the worst case scenario if it doesn't resolve itself. I think it's just the waiting that is so tough now.
