15 month old not walking yet

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post my question on, but here goes. Should I be concerned that my almost 15 month old daughter isn't walking yet? Her two older sisters ( ages 7 and 3) were walking at her age, and I didn't know if it's something to worry about.

I know you're not supposed to compare children, your own or some one else's, but I'm a little worried. She rolled over and crawled early, and stands on her own from a sitting posistion unassisted.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA ladies

Re: 15 month old not walking yet

  • I think 15 months is considered the average age to be walking, with anything up to 18 months being considered within the "normal" range. As long as she's doing other developmentally appropriate things, no, I wouldn't be worried.

  • Danica didnt start walking until a little after 15 months.  I would give her some time and around 17 or 18 months I would call the dr to see about some early intervention

  • I've definitely heard of children who are not quite walking yet at 15 months, although I think the majority are.  I wouldn't be too overly concerned about it if her other development is on track, she may just not feel like walking yet!  That said, I would definitely be very intentional about practicing with her and encouraging her to walk using push toys, holding your hands, etc..  Not pushy to the point she doensn't want to, just trying to incorporate it more into your normal play.  Or maybe you already are....

  • "normal" range for beginning walking is up to 18 months, so 15 months is not considered "late". Is she pulling up on things to stand? I am sure she is 100% fine, she just will walk when she is ready!

  • DevonPow know my daughter, who didn't walk or stand alone until 4 days shy of 18 months.  She didn't pull up and cruise until 14 months.  She sat up early (5 months) and then didn't crawl until 10.5 months.  She is 100% fine.  She learned to walk in ONE DAY.  First steps on a Friday, full time walker by Sunday.  After a week or two she was running, standing up in the middle of the room without pulling up, climbing, and now, at 20 months, looks like every other kid her age.

Her pedi said all along that 18 months was the end of the normal range (Kate took her sweet time...4 days cushion!) and she was in PT for other issues and the physical therapist said the same.  At 15 months, I would not be worried if she is motivated to stand, will walk with a push toy, cruises, etc.

I completely agree. Talk to your pediatrician if it continues to concern you.  EI is incredible and sometimes just a little assistance is all it takes. GL

  • My son didn't walk until 16 months 2 days.  The dr. said it was not a concern at all.  They said they don't even start to consider a problem until at least 18 months.

  • Thanks ladies :)

Yes, she does pull up on things, and loves to climb ( up onto the couch, up the stairs, ect.). She got a doll carriage for Christmas, but would still rather stand at her Leap Pad activity table to play. The only way I've been able to get her to take steps is to stand behind her and hold her hands while I help her to "walk" towards Daddy.

Again, thank you all so much, you guys are awesome!

  • DS walked at exactly 15 months on the dot.  and that was only 2-3 steps.  walking on his own between objects, it was closer to 16 months.

so at 15 months, I would not be worried yet.

  • Just adding another late walker story to make you feel better...DD was a full 16 months before she started. The ped didn't even bat an eye about it at her 15-month appointment. She just said that it will happen, and it did.
