Trouble TTC

GTKY: Are you a knitter or crocheter?

I really enjoyed getting to know the crafty side a few of you ladies last week when we started talking about our knitting and crocheting habits.

I was hoping a few of you others were willing to share a few of your favourite projects you've created! Also how did you learn this craft and why do you do it?

Below are three of my creations. A crocheted baby blanket and matching baby elephant for a dear friends first baby. A knitted dress and matching sweater for another friends baby shower, and a knitted blanket I finished and surprised my Gramma with.

Both my Grandmothers taught me as a little girl and now I watch a lot of youtube videos to increase my skills and learn new patterns. It keeps my hands busy at night, keeps me from snacking and I love giving homemade gifts!

Re: GTKY: Are you a knitter or crocheter?

  • I'm a crocheter!  I can post some pics later.  :)

I've been crocheting for about 21 years.  My mom crochets, and I used to watch her all the time when I was a kid so I asked her to teach me.  I love it.  I usually crochet while I watch TV.

    TTC since 2011

  • Very amateur knitter. Dishrags, blankets, and scarves! I recently learned to knit in the round, though, and am working on my first pair of leg warmers. Figure they'll be ready for next winter :)

  • I can do neither but your work is amazing!   Completely off topic sort of but I'm planning to take a quilting class since I could t really get crocheting when I tried it a few times.

  • @Worldtravler0522 I think quilting is such a beautiful activity! My Grandmother quilts and when I got married she made us a beautiful one for our bed. Have you heard of the 'Jelly Roll' Quilts? I want to tackle one of those!

I love your work @Plainjanie thank you for posting pics!!  I absolutely LOVE that sweater/dress!!!

I enjoy both knitting and crocheting but I'm a knitter at heart.  Some of my favorite projects so far have been hobo gloves, a kitchen towel, and beanie I made for myself when it was cold.  I love the towel because of how functional it is, and it does just fine in the washer/dryer once a week!

Right now I'm in the process of making my mom a cowl (using the honeycomb stitch that I just recently discovered and LOVE) and DH a pair of house socks.  I've never knitted socks before so I actually signed up for a private lesson next week at a local yarn shop to help get me through the heel part!

Here are some things I've crocheted recently, a blanket, a table runner, and a cowl using the half bullion stitch:

  • @wifeinraleigh28 if I could individually 'love it' to all of your pictures I would. Great work! I love the browns and the light/teal blues you use. Also your hat looks super fancy!

  • Thank you @Plainjanie!  The colors sort of match the color scheme of our house... I'm just a light blue/teal and gray kinda person when it comes to design ;)

The hat definitely looks impressive, but is pretty easy!  I used this pattern: https://www.pickles.no/waffel-hat/

  • Just wanted to revive this thread for a quick second because I literally just finished a cute little dish cloth and wanted to share:

I just love the look of the diagonal garter stitch!  I've made a lot of dish clothes over the last few months but this pattern is my fave.  Sturdy too! :)

  • Hi ladies - I used to be a regular but I took a break from ttc and I'm just now coming back but I am a crocheter! In theory I also know how to knit but just the basics and crocheting moves faster so I prefer that. Here are some things I made. I mostly do hats but occasionally I'll do something more fancy.

  • @wifeinraleigh28 that dishcloth was the very first thing I learned to knit as a little girl :) I still make them all the time! I think they make great house warming gifts!

    @ceclarlinetlo those dresses are darling!

  • @Plainjanie Somehow I missed the dish cloth train over the years because I only recently discovered the amazingness that is hand made dish cloths!  And others keep telling me that they were the first thing they ever made!  Crazy.  I learned to knit when I was 4 years old by my great aunt in France, then did it randomly here and there over the years until I rediscovered it when I was about 16.  I made about 200 scarves for myself and my friends.  I've made so many scarves but it never gets old.

I took a private knitting lesson today actually because I'm trying to learn how to make socks for the first time.  I'm glad I had a private lesson because I don't think I would have figured it out on my own or with youtube videos.  I'm still extremely confused but my teacher said that I should feel more comfortable after about the 2nd or 3rd pair that I make! :)

Just out of curiosity... what is your favorite thing to make?

  • hmmm @wifeinraleigh28 that is a tough question. I like trying new patterns. I'm on a big afghan kick right now and have been making blankets for everyone I know getting married. If I have no particular project I'm working on...I will knit dishcloths. Mine get moved into the 'rags' pile after a while so I have to replenish my stock on a regular basis. I also give them to my mom and my grandmothers. Overall, my favourite things to make are gifts. Hats, mittens, scarves, blankets...whatever I can give away.

    What about you?

A knitting lesson sounds neat! Out of 4 granddaughters on my moms side, I'm the only crafty one, so I get Grammas full attention if I ever have a knitting/crochet/sewing problem.

  • @Plainjanie I love knitting things for other people as well!  Right now all the projects I have on my to do list are for the next 5 birthdays of family and friends coming up.  But I think if I was going to narrow it down even more, I love the idea of knitting things people can wear.  Like socks, scarves, gloves, etc.

I wish I had easy access to a knitting family member!  My great aunt who taught me passed away many years ago, and my grandmother isn't much of a knitter herself.  It just kind of stuck with me alone in my family!

  • @ceclarlinetlo I have that dress saved on Ravelry! I'm mostly a crocheter but practice knitting once in a while. I've made a bunch of amigurumi, blankets, wrist warmers, scarves, plant holders, all sorts of stuff. My goal is to knit myself a sweater someday. I think I have like 9 rows of a cuff started. I also like gifting items, and teaching people. I helped my sister re-learn and she made this awesome hexagon afghan.
