Sciatica Relief

I am having shooting pains from my lower back down through my right leg. My butt hurts most of the time on that side. It's been slowly happening on and off over the past week but now it's to the point where I can barely walk when I get up from laying or sitting. I've never had sciatica but the people I know that have had it describe it just like this. It gets better if I tough through it and walk around for a little while but the first 20 minutes are horrible and it never truly goes away. I can't even roll over in bed without shooting pains.

Is anyone else having similar pains? What are you doing to make them go away? I will try anything at this point. I can't get to my doctor until the end of the week because I'm on the road for work all week (these new things seem to always happen right as I'm leaving town).

The good news is that the bloating and nausea seem to be gone and other than this pain I'm feeling great. I guess everything needs a trade off.

Re: Sciatica Relief

  • Try chiropractor and if you can find one a good massage helped me through my last pregnancy.

  • I busted out my Snoogle. It helped quite a bit for the pain while sleeping.
  • This happened to me right when I found out I was pregnant. It was my first symptom I guess...I tweaked it doing yoga of all things. I have had sciatica before and I know how dibilitating it can be. I could barely walk for about two weeks. It felt like I was stepping on a nail and the pain shot up my leg with every step. The worst.
I went for acupuncture and that helped a lot, but it still took about 3 weeks to go away fully. The more you lay on your back, the worse it is and the more you try to stretch it out, the worse it gets. I found going on easy walks (like you are doing) helped and laying on a heated rice pack. Otherwise, no heavy lifting and time are all that really help.
It sucks so bad. Sorry you are dealing with it. I've never gone to a chiropractor, but I agree with the PP that it might help as well.
  • This happened to me in my first pregnancy.  It got to the point where I literally couldn't get out of bed. Search for a chiropractor that specializes in pregnant women.  Be patient, it takes a few adjustments to start to feel relief, but you will get relief if you continue.  My chiropractor saved my body...I don't think I'd ever have been able to tolerate future pregnancies (sciatica is the worst!!).  I still go to her every 5 weeks or so and the pain has never come back (3 years).

I feel for you and hope you are able to find some relief!

  • I had no idea that this was a pregnancy symtom, I thought it was from sleeping on my parent's couch at Easter. For me, the pain is only in my left hip and it's so painful if I sit for more than a few minutes.
  • I had this when I was pregnant with DD#2.... When I was 6 or 7 months along it became unbearable. I went to the chiropractor and that relieved the pain.
  • I have this. I had it last pregnancy. I second @KS070508 advice. The body pillow really helps by allowing you to keep your knee level with your hip and not further stretch that area. According to my doc friend who specializes in pelvic pain, relaxin hormone is at its peak at 12 weeks so first tri body pain of this nature is incredibly normal and common. I get massages and use a heating pad when it gets bad. Ive also found that stregnthing the muscles around the area help too. It went away for me post partum.
  • I'm having this too!  Oddly enough I work for a large chiropractic chain so I know that is what I need, but since I'm hiding my pregnancy at work for a while, I can't get adjusted because I can't tell the doc.  I have the body pillow, it helps.  I've gotten a couple massages (always tell them) and the massage therapist taught me some stretches that help (try childs pose if you know yoga).  I've also been using some topical muscle relaxing creams on my lower back when it is very bad.  So far with this combination, I'm still walking around.  Let me know if you figure out any other tricks!

  • This website has great videos on how to relieve pain do-it-yourself-joint-pain-relief.com he has exercises for sciatica. It's all free and it totally works. Sometimes I have instant relief other times I get relief the next day.
  • Thank you everyone for your help! I was feeling a little better yesterday but then I didn't sleep at all last night because of the pain. I ordered myself a pregnancy pillow at 4am because I was so fed up. I also have appointments scheduled with a chiropractor and a physical therapist that my OB suggested. This just sucks.
