Bored baby

LO is 6 months old and while he's a happy baby, he is very bored easily. I am FTM, SAHM and I find myself challenged to keep him occupied when we're at home. We do go out to parks, libraries, shopping malls, the yard but when I need to be at home doing domestic stuff, I struggle because his attention span for something is so short. We don't have pets or other siblings...

He has a jumper which he likes for about 10 minutes and I do rotate out his toys. I have given him every safe kitchen gadget (spoons, funnel, measuring cups!), and random "safe" objects around the house for him to chew on just to buy 15 minutes of ME time. I'm running out of stuff to give him and I really don't want to buy toys (we have a lot!). He lasts 5-10 minutes tops in his play yard with toys/objects. Anyone else seeing this or have suggestions?

Re: Bored baby

  • Is your high chair on wheels? I put LO in her high chair and wheel her around the house so she can watch me do what I'm doing, but my hands are still free to clean, pick up my toddler's toys, meet my toddler's demands, etc.

i know you mentioned not getting anymore toys, and not sure if you have it, but Little Tikes makes a crab that moves on a sensor...my LO is absolutely obsessed! She'll lay in her rock and play and play with him on her lap, watch him on the floor, I'll put it on her high chair tray. He's her "thing" that she just has to have.

  • I have the same issue!!! I was starting to think LO was a very fussy baby, but im starting to think she just gets bored easily. We have 2 jumpers, the highchair, a play mat and we spend our days rotating around them.
Im going to look into the sensor crab!!

@kristynlee15 The crab is adorable!! And only like $14-15. My toddler is terrified of it, so it's the only toy LO has that is truly just hers lol.
  • Okay definitely going to invest in the catch me  crabbie - too cute !!!!

I have a mesh feeder and I will usually freeze milk in an ice cub tray and place the cube in the mesh feeder ... I'll have LO sit in her highchair so she can see me and that will keep her pretty busy for a little while  !! We just started sweet potatoes and I made sweet potatoes purée with the same ice cube trays ... Put a sweet potatoe cube in there today and she loved it !
  • Have you tried putting him in an infant carrier? Then you could wear him around the house as you do your thing. It might start to hurt your back after awhile, but could let you do some dishes or laundry once he gets bored.
Burns calories to carry around the extra weight too, so that's a bonus!
  • My guy does the exact same thing. I've given up trying to entertain him at home. We pretty much spend all day at parents groups, outside on walks, my fitness classes, or shopping. He's entertained enough to watch things while we're outside or at the store, but heaven forbid I put him down on his playmat. Although he's fine if I wear him to vacuum; he enjoys vacuuming.

Im hoping when he starts to crawl he can entertain himself more.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one! Ha I was feeling kind of guilty that maybe I wasn't finding the right toys to stimulate her. But then again, I think of kids who only have sticks to play with and I know she is just doing what a baby will do haha. When I read the heading "bored baby" it was exactly what I was looking for! Lol

I'm not sure how to help since I'm in the same boat, but thanks for making me feel not alone in the constant rotation of setting her in thing to thing every 15 minutes haha. She is 6 months.

One thing my boo does like is when she can interact with me when I'm doing things. It seems to distract her when I talk to her and she can see what I'm doing while she sits in her jumper. She is starting to hate the baby seat we have though because it's reclined and all she wants to do is sit up straight. I find some types of music have engaged her while playing too. But I hope you can figure out how to entertain this sweetie!!
  • Mine just wants me to be near her, not necessarily holding her just next to her. I think she likes my presence. I'll set her on the playmat and go make my breakfast and some days within a few minutes she realizes I'm gone and cries. But if I sit with her on the mat, she is perfectly fine.
  • Well...we tried the chase me crabbie...LObis afraid of it :(

Oh no :( but I kind of giggled lol. My LO pounces it and eats his claws. Like I said, it makes my toddler go running for the hills haha.
  • Lol i turn it on and she screeeaammmss. I thought maye id let her get used to it when its off but now if she sees it in the same room she loses her mind.
It is a little funny lol
