Is Athena a proper name or a pet name?

Is there any other names that have Thea in it or have a simmalur sound as Thea like Cynthia. So that Thea can be the nn. I can't edit the choices so yes is yes it is a proper name and no is no it is not a proper name. Sorry for the confusion.

Athena is a proper name, but I wouldn't personally get the nn Thea out of it.

Thea is the short form of Dorothea and Theodora. You could also just use Thea.

Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, so I think that qualifies it as a real name

I've actually never heard of a pet named Athena.

Althea is all I can think of as an alternative...but the Athena who I know is a strong badass woman who carries the name well.

Theadosia or Theodora are both options that would make Thea a possible nn. I'd use both of those before Athena, but that's just because Greek god and goddess references are NMS. I consider Athena to be a proper name, though.

All of the Thea I have met have pronounced their names "tay-uh" not "thee-ah" (rhymes with fee) if that makes a difference.

I don't care for Althea but what about Alethea? I think Thea from Athena is a bit of a stretch but since it would just be a NN I guess it doesn't matter.

My cat's name is Athena, but I don't think we've called her anything other than 'cat' in years. Lol.

But still, it's a perfectly valid person name.

I know someone who's daughter's name is Helen, but the nn is Holly... at the end of the day, you can really do whatever nn you want from the legal name...

That being said, Althea makes the most sense if you want "Thea" as the nn. Greek goddess names for children are nms, but you could do it if you want.

This is so strange to me. Do you live in the U.S.? If so, what region? I've never heard that pronunciation. I've been called a lot of things in my life but never "tay-uh." All of the Thea's I've ever seen on TV or movies have been pronounced "Thee-uh."
