Shortened cervix at 20 weeks!

Girls,  so I went to 20 week Ultrasound and found out that my cervix has shortened from 3.5cm to 2.5cm. Doctor is concerned and wants to see me back in 2 weeks to see the progression. She told me to cut back on exercising,  I can't lift my 30 lbs toddler at all and just take it easy.  I was exercising 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon,  she told me to cut back.  Do u think I should eliminate working out at all?
Any other advice would be appreciated. Any of you had that happen?  Oh and one more thing,  I have a bicornuate uterus...

Re: Shortened cervix at 20 weeks!

  • I had a shortened and funneled cervix with DS that turned into 6+ weeks of strict bed rest and ended in premature delivery. I would take everything your doctor says seriously. Did she prescribe progesterone?
  • Loading the player...
  • No she did not. She wanted me to take it easy and see me again in 2 weeks to see what happens and if it progresses she said we will need to have a "talk"...
  • What kind of exercising are you doing? If she didn't say to stop completely I'd probably only do something easy like prenatal yoga once or twice a week. Better safe than sorry...

  • 2.5 is short, but it's not super-scary-short. Cervix length can fluctuate, so fingers crossed that it lengthens and you just have extra monitoring for a bit. I would probably do what @tmk0325 suggested and maybe do a little around the house/at work to be ready for something like bed rest just in case. Maybe @lgem4 can chime in, too.
  • I was doing some prenatal plates in the morning and then either eliptical or light weight lifting in the afternoon.... maybe I was overdoing it with the exercise. But I wanted to have a healthy body and was exercising for that. I thought exercise was good for you.... I guess I won't risk it and just will really take it easy in the next 2 weeks... better safe then sorry.
  • Ladies thank u all for your replies. I really appreciate that. I'm very very nervous about all of this...
  • Its never easy to hear something might be wrong during pregnancy. When I started having issues with my cervix, one thing that helped me was to remember that everything was fine with DS--it was my body that was having issues that were not my fault. I just focused on doing whatever I could to keep him in as long as possible.

I hope your next doctor visit comes with lots of good news!
  • I have no advice but FX that everything looks good in 2 weeks! Take care of yourself mama!
  • No advice, but just saying FX that everything stays in the OK range.  I'm at risk for this since I had a LEEP in 2007, so far I've been OK with both pregnancies, but you just never know.  GL!

  • Thank you so much for your kind words! I was blaming myself for being selfish trying to stay in shape...
  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this extra worry. Pregnancy is stressful enough. As others have said, you didn't cause this with exercise, but not exercising could help slow any further damage. Shortening cervix is nothing to mess with, though. I would probably err on the side of being extra cautious until you have another check. I really hope you get reassuring news at your next check!!

Same here!  My cervix never shortened last time, but I still had bi-weekly checks.  This time around I'm going every 3 weeks to keep an eye on it.

OP, it's not anything you did, these things just happen.  I hope you get good news at your next appt.  Have they mentioned doing a cerclage to help keep it closed if it's still short?
  • No advice to give, but I hope everything goes well at your next appointment. Pregnancy is scary enough that it's worse when you have something to worry about. So I hope you get good news!
  • My doctor jsut said that we will have a"talk" if it doesn't improve in 2 weeks. I wanted to talk to her tomorrow and see if I can come see her in 10 days instead of 16 days, Im not sure if she ll agree, but everything that I've read said that when cervix is that low it should be checked in a week or so....
  • I have no experience with this, but you are in my thoughts and I hope this all gets sorted out without any more worry for you!
  • My OB and Perinatologist like to see 2.5 or longer.  Like others have said I would listen to your doctor.  Thinking of you and hoping all stays normal.
  • Do not wait two weeks to be seen. Mine went from 2.8 to 1.6 in less than a week. I am now on hospital bedrest. I'm also pregnant with twins so that could be why it progressed so quickly. But if I were you I would be asked to be seen sooner.
  • Thinking of you! Take it easy momma! Fingers crossed that you get good news at your next check up!
  • I would just cut out exercise for now and take it as easy as possible.  it's not worth the risk.
  • @skazymyrova  or any other momma who has this.. We're there any symptoms of this or was it a co plate surprise? I ask because I've had immense pressure down there and have been told this could be an option.. I plan on asking my dr and getting checked next appointment but was curious if it's something we are able to feel or not?
  • Total surprise for me. Made it to 30 weeks with no issues. At our checkup with the midwife, they said that baby was measuring big so they wanted an extra growth scan. Turns out my cervix was down to 1.7 and funneling. I was immediately put on strict bed rest--bathroom privileges and nothing else. My doctor told me I could relax on the bedrest and I had DS at 36 weeks, about three days after being allowed up and around.
  • @megframe16 about a week or two ago I was installing a car seat for my toddler, and afterwards I felt some pain down in my lower belly throughout the day, I didn't think anything of it,thought it was muscular and then it went away. Otherwise I did not feel anything at all... Its really scary...
  • I have just never experienced so much pressure down there before! Feels like it might fall off! I just noticed back pain the last day or two now so I'm going to for sure mention it to my doctor.
  • When is ur next appointment?  Is this your first pregnancy?
  • I have to schedule my next appointment. Probably this coming week though. Nope my third pregnancy. Which is why it is more concerning because my two others were not like that. (But they weren't twins either...) @skazymyrova
  • @megframe16 good luck, I probably wouldn't wait too long since things can change quickly with twins!

My doctor told me with ANY change in pressure of back pain with the twins to call labor and delivery to be seen right away. I know when I was having pressure issues last week, they wanted to see me ASAP. I ended up on hospital bed rest two days later. Hope everything turns out ok for you!
