Non stop grunting newborn

My 5 week old baby boy grunts CONSTANTLY through the night. It is unbelievable. I have never seen or heard of any baby doing this consistantly. He may do it for an hour straight or 5 hours straight but it occurs every single night for about 3 weeks now. He is not trying to produce a BM and he will grunt so hard he will make himself throw up! Night time is terrifying for me because I am scared he will choke or hurt himself inside by pushing so hard. He sleeps elevated in a rock and play but weve tried laying flat as well to no avail! Could this be from formula (he's on enfamil gentlease)? Any advice would be helpful!

Re: Non stop grunting newborn

  • My daughter is 8 weeks old and does the same thing. She actually has reflux and is on meds which does help a little bit. She also uses the gentlease. Talk to the Dr about possible reflux. I have noticed that she grunts less now and I'm not sure if it's from the meds or maybe she's outgrowing it, but it does make it hard to sleep bc I too worry she's going to choke bc sometimes it sounds like she has gunk in her mouth or something. Like maybe she's either spitting up and swallowing or its phlegm.

  • My LO was doing the grunting and reflux thing, although thankfully the reflux is only occasionally. Im pretty sure that her grunting is becuase of gas, becuase she farts alot, even though i burp her well after every feed. Also when she is grunting she quite often wiggles around. My doc recommended two things.

For baby : make a dill seed tea
    1/2 cup hot water
    8 dill seeds
steep and feed baby 3-5mls during (if on bottle) or after a feed (if breastfeed)
alternative to this is gripewater as its made with dill seed oil

    for mum:
    1/4tsp marjoram
    1/4tsp ground cumin
mix in shot glass of water and take between feeds
The herbs are supposed to help through your breastmilk

i have found the last few nights My LO has definitely slept more quietly and more peacefully so maybe it works!  Sorry for long post hopefully it helps

  • My 5 week old daughter grunted a lot in her sleep as well. I have used gripe water which did end up calming her but I also switched formula.  I was using the Enfamil Gentlease as it worked with our first born. However, I have been using the Gerber Gentle formula for the last 2 days and the grunting has stopped. She has slept sound for 5 hours straight.
  • Could he still be hungry?  Maybe it's time to add another oz?

  • My daughter is 4 weeks old and she dose same thing. what I learned is when I swaddle her she sleeps really well, also switching to Dr Browns bottle made huge difference with the gas, I also give her early morning sun bath which helps with reflex. Now she makes grunting noise only when she is hungry or stretching.
